As a movie enthusiast who grew up with the thrilling sounds of Tom Cruise’s high-flying adventures echoing through my childhood, I must say that this vinyl release is like finding a long-lost treasure. The expanded editions of “Top Gun” and “Days of Thunder” scores are not just a trip down memory lane, but an opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich sonic landscapes that made these iconic films soar.
For the first time ever, the scores of two of Tom Cruise’s most successful early films at the box office will be made available for a wider release on vinyl records.
On October 18th next week, the New York record label Enjoy the Ride Records plans to launch extended versions of Harold Faltermeyer’s music for “Top Gun” and Hans Zimmer’s for “Days of Thunder. These will be available as double LPs with a heavy 140 gram vinyl. The albums, initially released in 2023 on limited CD editions, will include the entire original film scores plus demos or alternate versions of the tracks.
Originally, just one tune from Harold Faltermeyer’s “Top Gun” score made it onto the 1986 soundtrack. However, a subsequent expanded edition released in 1999 included an additional track, the instrumental piece titled “Memories.” Here’s the list of songs that will be featured on the LP:
Title*: Carrier Operations – Takeoffs and Landings – 2:41
Scene 2:40 – Mav Bids Farewell to Charlie (Mav Saying Goodbye to Charlie)
19. Ready Room on Carrier and Departures # 2:47 (Alternatively, “Aircraft Carrier Ready Room Scene and Takeoff Scenes” or simply “Carrier Takeoff Scenes”)
Incident D20: Mav takes off/Mav encounters issues/Mav resumes combat operations/Mav returns to the carrier# – 11:11BONUS TRACKS
(#) Includes the tune of “Danger Zone” (or “Mighty Wings” or “Take My Breath Away”), but it’s not part of the actual movie.
This vinyl record comes packaged in a fold-out case that showcases the famous movie poster, along with images from the film itself. Extra-special color options can be purchased exclusively through EnjoyTheRideRecords.com, as well as at Light in the Attic, Mutant, and numerous retail outlets around the globe.
As a movie critic, I found myself intrigued by an interesting tidbit from Hans Zimmer’s score for the movie “Days of Thunder.” On its initial release, his music could only be found nestled beneath David Coverdale’s “Last Note of Freedom,” on the Enjoy the Ride Records’ “Days of Thunder (Music From The Motion Picture)” vinyl. Upon closer inspection of the track listing for this vinyl release, I was surprised to discover that Zimmer’s music wasn’t given a standalone spotlight, making it an intriguing hidden gem in the soundtrack!
