When Padma Lakshmi decided to leave Top Chef after almost 20 seasons, finding a replacement felt like an impossible task. Kristen Kish, who won season ten of Top Chef in 2012, quickly emerged as the perfect choice. For the past 12 years, Kish has been honing her skills as a host, working on shows like Restaurants at the End of the World, Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend, and the travel series 36 Hours. She also appeared on Fast Foodies, Last Chance Kitchen, and Selena + Chef, and frequently served as a guest judge on Chopped and Top Chef. In 2024, Kish brought her own style of hosting to Top Chef, connecting with contestants thanks to her shared experience. Many viewers also discovered her through her work on The Traitors, though she jokes she’s much more comfortable with cooking knives than those used for deception.
People often ask when I felt successful. I see myself as a chef first, even though I also appear on TV. But I don’t believe you should ever feel like you’ve ‘made it.’ Just like with my cooking, I’m always learning and improving. Each TV opportunity simply opens doors to new ones, and I’m enjoying the journey.
When I earned money from Top Chef, after taking out taxes, I used it for a down payment on my first condo. I was living in Boston at the time. I loved my food-related jobs, but I never imagined I’d be able to afford a place of my own. So, getting that money felt like a chance to finally be responsible and make a smart investment. And it worked out well – I sold the condo three years later for a profit!

Looking back, winning Top Chef over ten years ago was definitely the turning point in my career. I was 28 at the time, and now I’m 42. It was my first time on TV, and it really launched everything. The days and weeks after winning were crazy busy for my restaurant. It’s strange, though, because I didn’t initially aim for a TV career. Getting recognized for being on television, rather than for my food, is still a little surprising, even now.
You know, if I had to describe how I come across on TV in just five words, I’d say I’m pretty much just me. My role on reality TV is all about being authentic, and I bring everything I’ve learned over the past twenty-plus years to the table. Though, I definitely turn up the glam factor for the cameras – that’s not my everyday look! I’d say I’m honest, direct, playful, and definitely a bit goofy.
When did you feel most misunderstood by the audience, and what caused that feeling? Surprisingly, it wasn’t during my time on Top Chef. It happened on The Traitors, where people unfairly called me unintelligent, which is frustrating!
I didn’t excel at The Traitors because my professional life revolves around being a chef and a food expert – I’m used to cooking, not playing complex mind games. The show involves deception and deduction, which wasn’t something I was naturally good at. What made it even harder was that the audience at home knew everything that was happening, while we, the players, were kept in the dark. It was frustrating for viewers to watch us make mistakes, and they weren’t shy about pointing them out! But I understood – I signed up for the challenge and accepted that would happen.
Also, me buttering bread was a problem apparently.
If I could temporarily be anyone on reality TV, I’d want to be a behind-the-scenes observer, just watching what everyone else does. Some of their lives are really interesting! It’s wild to me that some people basically get paid to be on vacation and drink on camera. I find the ‘Real Housewives’ particularly complex, and I think we don’t always see the full picture of who they are. I’d love to see what their everyday lives are like. For example, Porsha Williams from ‘The Traitors’ is amazing – I’m a huge fan! I didn’t get to know her well while filming because she was eliminated quickly, but I’m sure a day in her life would be incredible.
Which reality TV star seems the most genuine – truly acting like their on-screen self – and who is the biggest contrast to their TV personality? I don’t watch much reality TV, though I know people who appear on those shows. I usually prefer watching baking competitions, so I don’t follow reality TV closely enough to give a good answer. However, I have met a couple of people who turned out to be surprisingly unpleasant.
Does every successful reality show require a villain? Not necessarily. Take Top Chef, for example. It doesn’t really have ‘villains,’ just contestants people prefer over others. If you’re not a fan’s favorite, that’s all there is to it. In my experience with shows like Top Chef – where the focus is on careers and skills – a villain isn’t needed at all.
Do you have anyone you consider an enemy? I don’t, really. Maybe I just haven’t crossed paths with enough people who fit that description. I’ve met some people who seem different on camera, but since I don’t socialize with them, I wouldn’t call them enemies. I just don’t bother with people who create conflict – I don’t have time for that. It seems like some people thrive on drama, though.
People often ask me what I miss most about life before becoming famous. I think it’s having normal conversations. Now, when I’m out, people tend to stick to very surface-level topics like the weather or breakfast. Everyone overhears things in public, and I prefer to keep my more personal thoughts private – you can’t really say what’s on your mind when you’re being listened to! For example, I love talking about shows like Top Chef, but I can’t do that in public. Plus, I don’t go out very often anyway.
So, you want to be a reality TV star? If you’re a chef or cook, I’d advise against it. If you want people to recognize your cooking, chasing fame can actually overshadow your talent. Let your skills and passion shine through – that’s what truly matters. If you want to showcase your abilities, apply for Top Chef instead.
Someone asked if I’d ever return to The Traitors. I’d say probably not, but you never know! If I did go back, I’d want to be a Traitor this time – knowing how the game works would be a huge advantage. I’d team up with Mark Ballas from my season; we’re really close friends and would be a formidable pair. Our ideal targets? Beyoncé, Julia Roberts, Charlize Theron, and the Jonas Brothers!
Wow, that’s a tough question! I’m not super familiar with reality TV drama, so I’m honestly drawing a blank. I don’t really follow those storylines or know who’s feuding these days. We prefer to stay out of trouble and remain neutral, honestly.
Okay, this is a tough one, but honestly? If I could host a dream dinner party with anyone, living or not, I’d invite the people who essentially raised me. I don’t know my biological parents, so getting to connect with them would be incredible – I have so many questions, and it would just be… meaningful. It’s a bit sentimental, I admit, but that’s where my head goes with this question.
If I could compete against another chef, I’d choose a friend—it would be a fun way to spend time together. I’d probably pick Mei Lin and Gregory Gourdet, even though they’re both incredibly talented and would definitely win! It would be great to lose to such amazing cooks.
While filming Restaurants at the End of the World, the on-set catering was incredible, largely due to the diverse locations. We constantly had access to unique snacks from all over the world. In Paraty, Brazil, a local restaurant owner provided lunch and craft services for the entire shoot. The food wasn’t just Brazilian – it was exceptionally diverse and delicious. It was special to have real restaurant food instead of standard catering. Plus, the restaurant was on the water! One day, we ate lunch at her floating restaurant, then everyone jumped into the beautiful, clear ocean. I even went paddle-boarding during my lunch break before changing and getting back to filming.
