Top 10 Unresolved Storylines in Completed TV Shows

One of the great things about television is that it gives filmmakers the space to fully develop a story. Unlike other mediums, TV allows creators multiple episodes to resolve plot points, and thoroughly explain characters’ motivations and events.

Modern TV shows often split stories into smaller parts, which has led to the frequent use of cliffhangers and flashbacks. Essentially, these techniques are used by writers to keep audiences engaged and wanting to see what happens next, whether it’s in the following episode or a future season.

It’s really annoying when a TV show ends with big questions still unanswered. Some mysteries are just left hanging forever, and as a fan, it’s incredibly frustrating, especially after following a storyline for years and expecting a proper ending. It feels like a letdown when you’ve invested so much time only to never get closure.

Often, TV shows deliberately leave questions unanswered and mysteries unsolved. However, sometimes storylines are simply dropped or forgotten, not by design. This can be just as frustrating for dedicated viewers, who feel like their time invested in those characters and plots was wasted.

Glove Girl

The Office

This storyline from The Office is a perfect example of a promising idea that was quickly dropped. It’s a subplot from a single episode focused on Michael Scott’s often-complicated romantic pursuits, and it didn’t get much development despite its potential.

In a season 5 episode called “Blood Drive,” Michael meets a woman while donating blood at a temporary clinic set up near the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin. He charms her, and she even thinks he’s cute! When she accidentally leaves a glove behind, it feels like the start of a classic romance—but unfortunately, we never see her again.

The Dinosaur Bones

Yellowstone

In the second episode of Taylor Sheridan’s show Yellowstone, the Dutton family discovers dinosaur bones on their property. This discovery reappears later in the season, and it seems like the fossils might play a role in their fight to keep their land.

Unfortunately, despite the excitement of finding dinosaur bones on private land in the US, these discoveries rarely lead to significant outcomes. Usually, a dig happens, and the landowner could potentially make a lot of money. Often, there are disagreements about where the fossils should end up – with a museum for research or a private individual.

Selling the dinosaur bones found on their land might have provided the Duttons with the financial boost they needed to keep their ranch afloat. The disagreement over the fossils themselves could have been a compelling story, and it also potentially stalled plans by developers who wanted to drill and mine on the property.

Dracula’s Disappearance

Penny Dreadful

Despite being one of the most overlooked horror shows of the 21st century, Penny Dreadful faltered with its finale, particularly in how it wrapped up Dracula’s story. Bringing Dracula into the show as Lucifer’s brother in season three seemed to promise an epic final conflict, but the ending ultimately felt underwhelming.

Malcolm and Ethan’s arrival at Dracula’s castle to rescue Vanessa Ives from becoming a vampire set the stage for a final confrontation. However, the showdown felt anticlimactic. Ethan ultimately killed Vanessa as she wished, and Dracula simply vanished without a struggle, leaving a disappointing end to the story.

Who Was Shooting From The Outrigger

Lost

The early 2000s TV show Lost was famous for its many unanswered questions, which have become a key part of how people remember the series. But the most frustrating mystery for fans remains the identity of the people shooting at Sawyer’s group from a hidden boat in the season 5 episode, “The Little Prince.”

The arrival of another group of armed sailors near the island had huge consequences for the show’s increasingly complex storylines. It became crucial for the audience to understand who these shooters were.

Despite the enduring mystery, the creators of Lost – Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse, Brian K. Vaughan, and Melinda Hsu Taylor – never revealed the answer. This omission continues to frustrate fans even now.

What Happens To Caitlin

Heroes

Many fans would love to see Caitlin, Peter Petrelli’s girlfriend from the original Heroes series, return in the reboot. Actress Katie Carr played Caitlin, who was left in a dangerous alternate future filled with a deadly virus when Peter unintentionally traveled back in time.

After he altered the past to prevent the virus, viewers were left questioning what became of Caitlin. She was never referenced again, seemingly erased from existence, along with the timeline where Peter had stayed with her. It was disappointing to see a character we cared about treated so abruptly.

Phoebe’s Parents

Friends

It was one thing for Phoebe’s friends to simply forget about her parents, but it felt like a real letdown when they weren’t around for important moments in her life. The show had started to explore Phoebe reconnecting with her family, so having them disappear again – after she’d been estranged from them for so long – undermined that progress.

Despite being Phoebe’s parents, Phoebe Abbott and Frank Buffay Sr. were almost completely absent from major life events like the birth of her triplets (which she carried for her brother and his wife) and her wedding to Mike. What’s particularly frustrating is that the show Friends never offered any explanation for their lack of presence.

The Azor Ahai Prophecy

Game Of Thrones

Game of Thrones, like many popular TV shows, didn’t always deliver satisfying conclusions to its most compelling plots. A particularly frustrating example was a major prophecy about a legendary warrior destined to overcome a great evil – the show never fully explained how it played out.

The Azor Ahai prophecy in Game of Thrones hinted that the story would end with one of the existing characters revealed as a legendary warrior destined to save the world. This hero was predicted to wield a special, fiery sword called the “Lightbringer” and defeat the White Walkers.

Instead, the show diverged from George R.R. Martin’s original novels. The fates of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen – characters many expected to play key roles in the story’s conclusion – left most fans feeling unsatisfied.

Tony’s Fate

The Sopranos

The unclear fate of Tony Soprano at the end of The Sopranos is arguably the most acceptable unresolved plot point on this list. Creator David Chase intentionally left the question of whether Tony lives or dies unanswered as an artistic decision.

The final scene of The Sopranos uses fast editing and focuses on a stranger entering the diner where Tony is sitting, making the audience expect something big to happen. However, the screen abruptly cuts to black before anything does, leaving viewers to wonder what ultimately happened to Tony Soprano.

The Underwoods Facing Justice

House Of Cards

Given the legal issues Kevin Spacey was facing, it wasn’t unexpected when he left House of Cards. However, the way his character, Frank Underwood, died on the show was still a major surprise. It also meant that a uniquely ruthless lead character in a political series never got his comeuppance.

Beyond manipulating his way into the presidency, Frank Underwood was responsible for the deaths of Peter Russo, Zoe Barnes, LeAnn Harvey, Aidan Macallan, and Rachel Posner, either directly or through his chief of staff, Doug Stamper. Claire Underwood, meanwhile, orchestrated the murders of Tom Yates, Tom Hammerschmidt, and Jane Davis.

Despite strong evidence linking them to the murders, neither Frank nor Claire ever faced legal consequences. Ultimately, Frank died by poison at the hands of Doug, and Claire killed Doug in a final confrontation in the Oval Office. The whole situation felt absurd.

Raymond Reddington’s True Identity

The Blacklist

The creators of The Blacklist suggest the show gradually reveals the true identity of Raymond Reddington, despite never explicitly stating it. It appears the popular fan theory – that Reddington is actually Katarina Rostova, a former KGB agent who underwent a gender transition – is true.

This theory remains flawed and relies on guesses the show never actually supported. Because of this, after ten seasons, The Blacklist never answered its main question. No other TV show has left a storyline quite as unsatisfying.
