Too Much Is Full of Lena Dunham Lore

Light spoilers for Too Much ahead.

Lena Dunham, during and beyond her hit show ‘Girls’, consistently maintained that the series was not an autobiographical account of her life, but rather a satire with no strict adherence to reality. This claim seems plausible when considering Dunham’s reputation as an open sharer; it’s challenging to discern where the program reflects its creator’s life. However, Dunham presents a contrasting perspective when discussing ‘Too Much’, her first semi-autobiographical work. In response to questions about Megan Stalter’s character Jessica, Dunham stated that the character is based on 18 of her friends. Similarly, Dunham and her husband, Luis Felber, share parallels with Jess and Will Sharpe’s Felix, as their relationships have a tumultuous course despite cultural and lifestyle disparities. Despite Dunham emphasizing the ‘semi’ in semi-autobiographical, there are numerous references to her real life, ranging from a breakup that propelled Dunham overseas to a small dog named Astrid. As for Andrew Scott’s character, a moody, passionate director in ‘Too Much’, it remains unclear whom he is modeled after, should anyone know, please share the information.

A big breakup

To start off, Jess finds herself in an emotional turmoil: Her former partner Zev (Michael Zegen) got engaged to Wendy (Emily Ratajkowski). With no romantic prospects left in New York, she seizes a job offer in London as a fresh start. The couple had been together for six years, similar to how Dunham and her ex-boyfriend Jack Antonoff were together for five. Their breakup occurred around the same time as Girls, and three years later, Dunham moved to the U.K. to direct the pilot of HBO’s Industry. Although Zev isn’t a mirror image of his Bleachers persona — he’s a writer, unlike someone who might or might not tamper with Taylor Swift tunes — he seems like a more fitting representation than, say, Adam Driver ever was.

A trendy new girlfriend

In simpler terms, Wendy Jones, portrayed by Ratajkowski in the show, is often referred to as a “knitting influencer.” This reminds us of Jack Antonoff dating textile or fashion influencers like Ella Emhoff. It’s intriguing to consider that Wendy might represent a blend of some of Antonoff’s post-Dunham relationships, such as model Carlotta Kohl, actress Margaret Qualley, and possibly even Lorde. The series, however, avoids making Wendy a joke, instead revealing her depth beyond being just a screen character. Ratajkowski imbues Wendy with warmth and self-awareness that allows both the character Jess and viewers to share mutual disapproval towards Zev, who becomes our common antagonist.

A little hairless dog

In the show “Too Much,” it’s not just Jess who steals the spotlight, but her adorable dog, Astrid (portrayed by Mia, a Chinese crested). Lena Dunham also owns another charming and hairy canine named Ingrid, along with a group of other dogs, cats, and pigs. However, in “Too Much,” Astrid becomes a source of conflict between Jess and Zev, pushing their relationship to the brink. Fans of Lena Dunham might recall her former dog, Lamby. Lena wrote about Lamby’s struggles in The New Yorker, explaining that her then-boyfriend, Antonoff (who is allergic to dogs), wasn’t particularly fond of Lamby’s presence at home. Eventually, Lamby was rehomed due to behavioral problems, but Lena thanked Antonoff for his love even when Lamby damaged floors, couches, and their life. Jack understands the significance of Lamby to Lena and allowed her to make the decision about him in her own time, even though it made his days difficult. Unlike Lamby, Astrid has a much gentler temperament and looks stunning in all her costumes.

A fire fiasco

Dunham clarified during an interview that she had accidentally lit herself on fire, emphasizing that it was unintentional and occurred while she was sober.

A Luis Felber cameo

In the latter part of the show, you’ll spot Dunham’s real-life spouse, Felber, who serves as the inspiration for Sharpe’s character Felix. He makes a brief appearance as the DJ at the disastrous wedding that Jess and Felix attend. Moreover, Felber is the one who penned the song played during the reception, titled “I’m Horny.

A quickie wedding

In a short span of a year, Dunham and Felber, as well as Jess and Felix, decided to tie the knot. Their decisions seem spontaneous yet fitting, appearing as if there was no other choice that made sense for them.

A super-niche cameo

Rita Ora appears in one of the many celebrity appearances on the show “Too Much,” where she portrays Santa Claus in an advertisement directed by Jess in the second-to-last episode. The collaboration between Lena Dunham and Rita Ora might seem unusual, similar to Jessica Alba’s brief appearance at the beginning of the series. However, dedicated fans may recall that Lena was a rare celebrity listener of the podcast “Who? Weekly,” which often features Rita Ora. In fact, Rita has long been a point of interest for “Who? Weekly.” So, it’s not surprising that Lena chose to cast Rita in a role that addresses the question: “What is Rita Ora up to?
