TommyInnit vows to stop making AI content and deletes YouTube video after backlash

TommyInnit has announced his decision to permanently stop creating content related to artificial intelligence, following criticism over a deleted video and claims that AI may have been involved in the illustrations of his book.

On June 15th, a YouTube content creator posted a humorous video lasting 30 minutes, entitled “Q&A with AI About Myself.” In this video, he engaged in a comical interplay with a generative artificial intelligence.

Although the video was designed to be humorous, it faced criticism from many fans who believed it subtly endorsed potentially damaging technology, particularly in relation to its impact on the environment, specifically energy consumption associated with AI.

In the video’s description, Tommy had already seemed hesitant, reportedly writing:

Just wanted to share my thoughts, folks. I strongly believe that artificial intelligence could potentially cause more harm than good. In fact, I worry it might lead us down a dangerous path and I wholeheartedly oppose its use. Pursuing objectives that undermine human spirit should never be the goal of any corporation.

A wave of criticism ensued after the previous month’s dispute involving claims by Reddit users that an AI might have contributed to the creation of TommyInnit’s Survival Guide book. This suspicion stemmed from illustrator Amrit Birdi, who lists an “Artificial Intelligence Lab” on his official website.

Despite no definitive proof that AI tools were employed in the book, the speculation certainly fanned the flames of debate.

TommyInnit takes down AI video after controversy

On June 25, Tommy addressed the controversy with a statement on X:

I apologize, it turns out I was unaware of the harmful environmental effects associated with AI. I assure you that I have no desire to propagate such impacts within my community.

Over the past week, I’ve been away from the internet, but upon further research, I’ve removed the video titled ‘Asking AI About Me’ and am not intending to produce any more AI-related content in the future.

I want to clarify that I was unaware of the environmental consequences associated with AI, and I certainly don’t wish to endorse such impacts in any way through my audience. Over the past week, I’ve been disconnected from the internet, but upon learning more about this topic, I have removed the video titled “asking AI about me” and have no intentions of creating similar content in the future.

His apology, however, sparked a new wave of criticism from some creators.

Tectone, a streamer on Kick, remarked that it seems difficult to constantly demonstrate moral integrity because you’ve catered to a feeble audience for so long. If you’re truly concerned about potential harm to the environment from AI, consider disconnecting from the internet altogether and refrain from using your phone as well.

YouTuber Donut Operator simply responded: “Really? Dude, c’mon.”

Tommy hasn’t responded to the feedback from other content creators as of yet, but there’s a split among fans, with some claiming he’s giving in to pressure. It’s worth noting that he’s not alone in this situation; many YouTubers are encountering criticism for utilizing AI.

Previously in June, MrBeast faced criticism due to developing an AI thumbnail generator for content creators. As a result, he pledged a set of modifications he intends to implement in the future.
