Tomb Raider TV Series Reportedly “Dead”

Reports indicate that the upcoming Tomb Raider TV series on Prime Video, being developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (known for Fleabag), has allegedly been postponed or delayed. This is based on information from sources who spoke to Daily Mail, suggesting that the scripts were not progressing at a pace suitable for filming and were still under development.

According to reports, Sophie Turner, famous for her role in Game of Thrones, was initially chosen to portray Lara Croft in the upcoming series. However, it seems that she might not be attached to the project anymore, as per the report. Amazon Prime Video declined to comment when Daily Mail reached out for a statement.

The Tomb Raider series for Amazon Prime Video received approval under the guidance of Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. However, Salke recently departed from the company following rumors of a power struggle. As Salke was reportedly directly involved with the Tomb Raider series, her exit might also mean the potential cancellation of the series.

According to a report by Matthew Belloni at Puck in March, it was revealed that the Tomb Raider game series underwent numerous scriptwriting sessions, costing an estimated “tens of millions” for its production.

Previously, Salke expressed her belief that Tomb Raider would become a significant franchise for them, highlighting Waller-Bridge as an ideal choice for the project’s lead. In turn, Waller-Bridge also showed excitement about the series, stating that it feels like her career has been preparing for this opportunity following her work on the James Bond movie No Time To Die and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Although the Tomb Raider series seems to have hit a pause, Amazon is set to release a fresh Tomb Raider title developed by Crystal Dynamics. Interestingly, this upcoming game wasn’t anticipated to link with the television show.

It’s possible that Prime Video may cancel Tomb Raider, which would be another significant change at the company following the news that Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce the upcoming James Bond film for Amazon. This comes after reports suggest that Amazon purchased out the franchise caretakers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson from their contract.
