Tomb Raider devs share sad news despite warm remasters reception

Crystal Dynamics is the latest studio affected by layoffs.

  1. The team announced that 17 developers have left their job.
  2. The decision was taken due to business reasons. It’s said that this should better set up the studio according to its current and future needs.
  3. The management assures that the layoffs won’t hurt the projects currently underway.

Crystal Dynamics is part of the Embracer Group, a company that over the past two years has significantly reduced its workforce and shut down several studios including Volition and Free Radical Design, known for their work on the Timesplitters franchise.

Warm reception of remasters didn’t save Crystal Dynamics

Lately, Crystal Dynamics has been predominantly working on updating their previous projects. In collaboration with Aspyr Media studio, a subsidiary of Embracer Group, they have released remastered versions of Tomb Raider I-III, Tomb Raider IV-VI, and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2. These titles were met with positive responses, but unfortunately, even these successful projects didn’t prevent layoffs at Crystal Dynamics.

It’s worth noting that Crystal Dynamics, with its large staff, is able to absorb the departure of 17 employees without significantly disrupting their ongoing projects, although it’s regrettable for those affected.

Currently, Crystal Dynamics is developing the upcoming title in the Tomb Raider series, while collaborating with The Initiative studio for the remake of the Perfect Dark series.
