Tom Holland should be the next James Bond and there’s a simple reason why

Tom Holland, known as Holland, is said to be leading Amazon’s list for the role of the next James Bond. This prospect has set fans buzzing with excitement – a combination of being both thrilled and curious – and I firmly believe that it’s high time this became a reality.

In early this year, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who’ve been overseeing Bond’s creative direction for a long time, handed over their control to Amazon. It’s reported that Jeff Bezos paid close to $1 billion for the rights. This announcement has left many feeling disheartened and preparing for the shift of Bond towards streaming platforms, with an abundance of potential spin-offs on the horizon.

After some time, it’s justifiable to feel (a cautious sense of) optimism: Denis Villeneuve has been chosen as the director for the upcoming film (with Tanya Lapointe from Dune producing), and they won’t cast the next actor until the script is finalized. There’s a palpable respect, an awareness that whatever follows will be significant; it could be magnificent or disastrous.

Despite ongoing speculation, the primary question that needs resolution is: Who will take on the role of Bond next? Rumors suggest Holland might be a contender, and for those hesitant about this possibility, here’s why it could be an excellent choice.

Tom Holland would be an exciting new James Bond

I’d like to make two points clear. Initially, it has been reported that Holland is being considered for a role by Variety, which also includes Jacob Elordi (from Saltburn and Euphoria) and Harris Dickinson (known for Babygirl and The Iron Claw) on Amazon’s potential casting list.

In addition, I tend to think that the ideal actor for Bond isn’t someone who takes on the role, but rather one who is chosen by it, as it bestows unprecedented fame upon any man. Yet, might I be seen as a hypocrite for suggesting that Holland, known for portraying Spider-Man, the most renowned superhero, should play Bond? Yes, to some extent.

an admired young performer who appears to be an unlikely fit for the role?

Without forgetting, when Daniel Craig was chosen to play the secret agent, the reaction was extremely negative; newspapers featured headlines lamenting a blonde 007, and even a website titled “Daniel Craig is not Bond” was created (and surprisingly, it’s still active today).

As a die-hard James Bond fan, I must admit that Timothy Dalton’s tenure as 007 wasn’t universally adored, mainly because some felt Pierce Brosnan had been unfairly overlooked for the role. However, the situation was corrected in due time with the release of GoldenEye.

Through the release of Casino Royale, Craig silenced all doubters. This groundbreaking, raw, unprecedented portrayal of Bond stands among the most influential and memorable action films of the 21st century; it’s Denis Villeneuve’s preferred installment within the series.

Moving on to Holland now. Unlike Craig who exuded a cold, sharp demeanor in smaller films before Bond, he’s warm, non-threatening, and radiates youthful charm as a movie star. Standing at just 5’7″, it might be hard for some to envision him as the ultimate cinematic ladies’ man; however, Bond requires an edge, and Holland hasn’t had the opportunity to showcase his romantic acting talents alongside leading ladies like Vesper or Madeleine yet.

The ideal candidate for Bond should not be bland; unfortunately, Henry Cavill seems to fit that description, given his age of 42. Moreover, the recurring calls for Idris Elba and Tom Hardy are equally uninspiring, as they too have surpassed their prime years.

It’s not as if Tom Holland is a poor performer; quite the contrary. He’s given outstanding performances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his work in “No Way Home” showcases some of his best acting yet, with a mix of intense emotional depth and physical presence that remains endearing. Additionally, Holland has already demonstrated his range with films like “The Devil All the Time,” where he convincingly portrayed a powerful scene involving kicking a man with a car door – a performance that leaves no doubt about my assessment.

You might be thinking, “They’ll cast anyone as Bond these days.” But whoever takes on the role next is walking in the footsteps of one of the most cherished Bonds ever. The deck is already stacked against him – and raising the stakes makes it even tougher. If they choose Holland, intrigue could eventually win out over the initial shock, and if he succeeds, he’ll gain a sophisticated, unique reputation as 007 in the eyes of many.

Contrary to what George Lazenby stated, this situation has indeed occurred for others before – it seems more like a tradition. Amazon should move swiftly if they wish to secure someone like Holland with a 15-year contract; clearly, they don’t have an unlimited amount of time at their disposal.
