Tom Holland Says Robert Downey. Jr Playing Doctor Doom Was a ‘Tough Secret to Sit on’ Because ‘I Have a Reputation for Ruining Things’: ‘I’ve Done No Press’

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that Tom Holland’s revelation about Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom is an exhilarating twist! The bond between these two actors, forged on the silver screen through their iconic characters Spider-Man and Iron Man, has been a joy to watch unfold.

I had the privilege of being among the chosen few who were privy to Robert Downey Jr.’s sensational Comic-Con unveiling, where it was disclosed that the previous Iron Man/Tony Stark actor would reprise his role as the menacing Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The big reveal will see Downey make his debut as Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday,” scheduled for release in 2026, which will be helmed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who are making their comeback to Marvel following “Avengers: Endgame.

I’ve been having many conversations with Robert Downey Jr., particularly discussing his upcoming return in Marvel, which is incredibly thrilling. It was quite challenging to keep that secret as I have a tendency to accidentally reveal things and I’ve deliberately avoided doing any interviews,” Holland shared on the “Rich Roll” podcast.

Actor Tom Holland, well-known for revealing secrets about Marvel films during interviews, has become quite famous for this, to the point that a YouTube video titled “Tom Holland Spoiling Marvel Movies for 13 Minutes Straight” has amassed an astounding 20 million views.

Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. developed a strong friendship as their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) often overlapped, with Downey’s Iron Man acting as a mentor to Peter Parker (played by Holland) throughout multiple films. Their first shared appearance was in “Captain America: Civil War,” and Downey reprised his role in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” They also worked together in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” The death of Tony Stark (Downey’s character) at the end of “Endgame” significantly impacted the storyline of “Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Some Marvel enthusiasts had been eagerly anticipating Robert Downey Jr.’s comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as he hinted in recent conversations that he might rejoin. Fans, therefore, assumed this meant he would resume his role as Iron Man/Tony Stark given the MCU’s current focus on the multiverse. However, Downey’s return as Doctor Doom took everyone by surprise instead.

The movie “Endgame” showcased the demise of Iron Man, and Marvel Studios’ head Kevin Feige made it clear in an interview with Vanity Fair last December that he wanted to preserve Downey’s poignant departure without alterations.

I’ve always cherished the poignant memory of Iron Man’s departure, a moment we vowed not to revisit. For countless hours over several years, we labored diligently to reach that pivotal point, and we’ve always felt it inappropriate to erase or diminish its impact in any manner.

More information about the portrayal of Downey’s Doctor Doom remains confidential, but many Marvel enthusiasts anticipate a confrontation between this character and Holland’s superhero due to the dramatic possibilities of Spider-Man encountering a villain who resembles a mentor figure.

The revelation of Doctor Doom was kept under wraps as a tightly held secret. Fellow Marvel actor Sebastian Stan, who was at Comic-Con to promote “Thunderbolts”, admitted on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that he had no idea Downey was even present. Marvel did not escort Downey into the backstage waiting area, so all his former colleagues were kept in the dark about his presence.
