Tom Holland Read ‘Spider-Man 4’ Script With Zendaya and Says It’s ‘Excellent’ but ‘Needs Work’; Fitting Sequel Into MCU Timeline Is a ‘Challenge We’re Facing’

As a seasoned movie reviewer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming “Spider-Man 4” is shaping up to be a web-tastic addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With Destin Daniel Cretton taking over the directorial reins from Jon Watts and a creative pitch that’s got Tom Holland and Zendaya bouncing around their living room in excitement, this film is bound to be a real movie worthy of fans’ respect.

Tom Holland shared during an interview on the Rich Roll Podcast that he’s reviewed a preliminary script for his upcoming fourth Spider-Man film and it requires some refinement, but the writers are doing a commendable job. It was reported in September by EbMaster that Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” is currently in discussions to helm the sequel, replacing Jon Watts as the franchise director for Holland’s series.

One aspect is that when it comes to “Spider-Man 4”, Tom Holland explained that each movie is like a small part in a big mechanism known as Marvel. The machine needs to keep functioning, and it’s crucial to find the right moment to fit into its schedule for the greater good. This is one of the hurdles we’re encountering. Achieving this within the given timeframe might be challenging, but with the team we have on board now, it’s definitely possible.

Holland stated that we possess a creative piece, along with a pitch and a draft, which he finds impressive. Although there’s room for improvement, the writers are doing an outstanding job. He read it three weeks prior and it sparked enthusiasm within him. Together with Zendaya, they sat down to read it, and at times, they were so excited that they jumped around their living room, feeling that this project is a genuine movie worthy of respect from fans.

I’ve been captivated by the incredible performances of Tom Holland, who has breathed life into the iconic character of Spider-Man in three standalone films directed by Watts – “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021). Not only that, but he’s also graced the screen in Marvel’s epic blockbuster, “Avengers: Endgame.” The talented Zendaya brings MJ to life within the MCU.

2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” concluded with Doctor Strange, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, casting a spell that made everyone forget who Peter Parker is, including his friends MJ and Ned (played by Jacob Batalon). The storyline for “Spider-Man 4” likely picks up from this predicament.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, revealed in February 2023 to Entertainment Weekly that a fourth Spider-Man film featuring Tom Holland was being drafted at that time. He added, “The only thing I can say is that we have the plot. We have grand plans for it, and our writers are currently working on it.” The scriptwriting process was temporarily halted due to the WGA strike that occurred later in 2023.

In November, Holland expressed that he would reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in a fourth film only if the team behind it can accurately portray the character well.

At that point, I only shared that discussions are ongoing regarding a possible fourth version of my character,” Holland stated. “However, whether we can successfully replicate the character is yet to be determined.

He expressed a strong sense of guardianship towards Spider-Man. He’s deeply grateful for their shared work on a series that continually improved and became more successful with each installment, which is quite uncommon. Therefore, he wishes to preserve his legacy and won’t create another one just for the sake of creating one. It must be worthy of the character.
