There are lots of theories about what’s next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but many of them center on Loki, who has become one of the franchise’s most important and powerful characters. The actor who plays Loki, once considered for the role of James Bond, is also returning to the spy genre in the second season of the series The Night Manager. He recently spoke with GQ about the new show, and naturally, the conversation turned to his future in the MCU.
Tom Hiddleston has been playing the character Loki, known as the God of Mischief, since 2011. Many fans think his story might reach a noble conclusion in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, which marks 15 years since he first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though Hiddleston is careful not to reveal details about the new movie, he did offer some hints to excite his followers.
I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve created – it’s a truly significant achievement. The core of the story is exceptionally clever and completely unexpected. As far as I know, this approach hasn’t been used before.
Tom Hiddleston, looking back on his experience playing Loki, explained that for the character to truly change and find a different path, he needed to come to terms with his past actions. This acceptance, Hiddleston said, allowed Loki to take control of his own destiny.
Tom Hiddleston’s Loki Could Go Out in a Blaze of Glory in ‘Doomsday’

I’ve noticed that characters can stick around in comics and cartoons for ages, but when they jump to live-action, especially in something huge like the MCU, things are different. Tom Hiddleston could probably play Loki for a while longer if he wanted to, but it feels like his time will eventually wrap up in one of the next Avengers films. It’s just the nature of these big movie universes, sadly!
Loki started as a villain opposing his brother, Thor, and became a bigger danger after joining Thanos’s attack on New York in the first Avengers movie. Since then, he’s faced death and come back to life multiple times, defeated a hidden version of Kang at the end of time, pursued another of the MCU’s major multiversal threats, and now finds himself as the key to maintaining the stability of the entire Marvel multiverse.
This situation is what makes Doctor Doom’s next move so unpredictable. The upcoming events of Doomsday seem destined to drastically change the Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially even leading to Loki’s death as the multiverse unravels. Meanwhile, Thor doesn’t realize a version of Loki still exists, which could result in a bittersweet reunion where they are ultimately separated again, possibly forever.
