Typically, when considering “what if” scenarios in movies, these revolve around actors who auditioned for roles and didn’t get them. However, with the 2025 movie schedule marking the 20th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice, this classic tale has been rejuvenated. In the instance of Tom Hardy narrowly missing out on the role of Mr. Darcy, it’s less about “what if” and more like a shocked exclamation of “WTF?
In a conversation with VT, Tom Hardy, famously known for his role in Havoc, was seen interacting with some retired police dogs. Clearly comfortable in this setting, it was evident that he was at ease. With the same raw honesty that characterizes his best performances in films, Tom clarified certain matters as follows:
Unfortunately, the producer made it clear to me that I didn’t get the audition for the role of Mr. Darcy. They mentioned that there’s a specific image or vision of Mr. Darcy that most women have, and unfortunately, Tom, you don’t fit that description. That’s just how show business works.
Are we discussing Tom Hardy, the fellow known for his role in the 2008 film adaptation of “Wuthering Heights”, which later earned him a spot on the literary fan bingo card?
It’s apparent that Emily Bronte and Jane Austen aren’t identical in their writing styles, and opinions on “Pride and Prejudice” can vary widely, just as they do with any work. However, it’s hard to imagine a man who has mastered a gothic classic wouldn’t be capable of adapting well to the task at hand, isn’t it?
In light of the situation, I should tone down my response somewhat because the casting choice of Matthew MacFayden as Mr. Darcy by director Joe Wright is more than justifiable. After all, this actor has earned his iconic status for good reasons – he even sports a hoodie bearing an image from the famous hand-flex scene in “Pride and Prejudice”. Notably, he’s a performer who can seamlessly switch between portraying Austen’s characters and those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with equal grace.
But isn’t that argument equally supportive of Tom Hardy’s versatility as an actor? If transitioning from Mr. Darcy to Mr. Paradox in Deadpool and Wolverine doesn’t seem incongruous, then the leap from Heathcliff to Venom, and also Eddie Brock, isn’t such a stretch, right?
It seems as though history unfolded in a deliberate manner. This is particularly true considering that if Hardy hadn’t been rejected, we wouldn’t be having this interview featuring Mr. Hardy’s affection for retired police dogs. I certainly don’t want to let down the animal-loving actor or the little ones who resemble those depicted below.
Fans of Pride and Prejudice, could you clarify something for me? Is it not feasible that Tom Hardy should play a character similar to Mr. Darcy, or another Regency-era heartthrob of your preference? Given that the movie featuring Keira Knightley is currently being re-released in theaters and is also available on Netflix, this provides ample chances for us to either validate my viewpoint or disprove it.
As a fellow Netflix enthusiast, I’d like to remind you not to miss out on the thrilling ride that is Gareth Evans’ latest creation, “Havoc”. Unlike the tranquil world of Jane Austen, this action-packed film is more about high-octane chases and pulse-pounding suspense!
