Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ Secures China Release Despite Trade Tensions

In a triumphant turn of events for Paramount, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is scheduled to debut on May 30th in China’s cinemas.

The movie starring Tom Cruise in a lead action role is among the increasing number of American films being shown in China this year. Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” and Universal’s “How to Train Your Dragon” have already had their Chinese premieres. Currently, “A Minecraft Movie” is the top Hollywood import in China, still playing in theaters there.

The recent approvals indicate that Beijing hasn’t fully implemented its promise from April to decrease American films imports, which was a potential countermeasure to President Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods. However, since then, Donald Trump has implemented a 90-day halt in the U.S.-China tariff dispute, lowering U.S. tariffs on Chinese products from 145% to 30%, while China has reduced its counter-tariffs on American imports from 125% to 10%. This short-term ceasefire, starting May 14, seeks to reduce trade tensions and open up opportunities for further talks. Trump described this move as a “fresh start.

Paramount views the ticket sales in China as a significant chance for the eighth spy series film to generate substantial revenue at the box office. To date, this franchise has earned more than $4 billion worldwide, with about half a billion dollars coming specifically from Chinese viewers.

Simultaneously, the movie created quite an impact during its premiere at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, with Tom Cruise, director Christopher McQuarrie, and other main cast members present.

As a film critic for EbMaster, Owen Gleiberman commented on “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”: “In the death-defying finale of this ‘M:I’ series, Tom Cruise performs a daring stunt that is typical of this 30-year-old franchise but with an unexpected twist. He outdoes himself in an extraordinary manner, soaring past all his previous stunts, leaving us in astonishment.
