On Sunday night, Tom Cruise carried on with his worldwide promotional journey for “Mission: Impossible – The Last Stand” at the premiere of the film in New York City.
This tale represents the conclusion of the past three decades,” Cruise said to the bustling crowd at AMC Lincoln Square, a venue renowned for its top-tier Imax screens. “We’ve been discussing ‘Dead Reckoning – Part One’ for about seven years now, and McQ wanted to make two parts. I was surprised when he suggested two.
In this context, filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie is being referred to, who directed the 2023 movie “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” and its sequel, originally called “Dead Reckoning – Part Two,” but later changed to “The Final Reckoning.” The story resumes with Tom Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt, as he frantically searches for a malicious AI known as the Entity before it wreaks havoc.
Cruise spoke up, “As we filmed ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, faced a pandemic, and endured two setbacks, we persevered. We all rallied to make this happen. It’s a tremendous pleasure and honor to be here and provide entertainment for you.
In 2015 with “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” 2018’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” and the recently released “Top Gun: Maverick” under his belt, filmmaker McQuarrie acknowledged and commended his frequent acting partner.
McQuarrie stated, ‘Each one of us is gathered here due to Tom.’ He’s renowned for his stellar acting and breathtaking stunts. What you’ll witness is a movie where he consistently surpasses those impressive feats.
Before the film started rolling, Cruise ensured everyone in the audience had their house in order, considering that “The Final Reckoning” runs for an extended period of 2 hours and 49 minutes. (It’s quite a long sit, isn’t it?) He checked if everyone was ready with their popcorn. When no one responded, he inquired again: “Has everyone got their popcorn?” Upon hearing ‘yes!’ echoing through the room, Cruise said confidently, “I’m going to grab mine now. I usually munch on two or three buckets [during the movie].
Before the screening event, Cruise’s co-actors such as Simon Pegg, Angela Bassett, Nick Offerman, and Tramell Tillman, along with guests like The Weeknd, Jenni “JWoww” Farley (known for her role in “Jersey Shore”), Jesse Solomon, and Carl Radke (“Summer House” stars) all met up for a pre-celebration at a Lincoln Center restaurant.
Mission: Impossible – The Last Accounting” made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, receiving a five-minute long standing ovation from the crowd. Paramount Pictures, the production company behind this eighth action-packed spy movie, additionally held premieres in Tokyo and London. While standing ovations are less common during U.S. premieres, the excited New York audience leapt to their feet at the end, applauding vigorously for Cruise and his team.
In my role as a movie critic, I’ve had the thrill of witnessing Tom Cruise, our fearless Ethan Hunt, boast about the death-defying stunts he executes in the latest Mission: Impossible installment. This is particularly noteworthy given his past exploits, which include scaling the towering Burj Khalifa for “Ghost Protocol,” hanging onto a plane soaring at 1,000 feet for “Rogue Nation,” performing a breathtaking 360-degree helicopter corkscrew in “Fallout,” and freefalling over 500 times for “Dead Reckoning.” It’s an adrenaline rush just thinking about it!
Cruise shared with Cannes audiences that for ‘The Final Reckoning,’ he intended to push the boundaries to an incredible extent. This included walking between a biplane’s wings while experiencing weightlessness. He even had to instruct the pilots on how to fly the plane with him on the wing, explaining just how intense it was due to the strong air pressure hitting the wings.
In the upcoming venture for Cruise’s production, the goal is to draw a global crowd to cinemas for “The Final Reckoning,” marking the last installment in the long-running series that spans 29 years. The previous film, initially titled “Dead Reckoning – Part 1” before being renamed to exclude the first part, struggled at the box office against “Barbenheimer,” earning $570 million globally on a budget of $300 million. With reports suggesting that “The Final Reckoning” has an even higher production cost, it will need to surpass its predecessor’s earnings to warrant such a hefty investment. At the moment, “Fallout” holds the record for the highest grossing film in the series with $791 million worldwide.
