Tom Cruise’s Epic Stunt in Mission: Impossible Almost Ruined by One Awkward Line!

The following contains minor spoilers for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

The much-anticipated final installment of the “Mission: Impossible” series, titled “The Final Reckoning,” has been released, and judging by its strong opening weekend box office performance, fans were eager to witness more death-defying stunts from Tom Cruise. I can confirm that the film features one of the most spectacular sequences in the entire series, with only minor flaws detracting from an otherwise near-perfect experience.

I’m not overly fond of the Mission: Impossible series, I tend to favor John Wick characters more than Ethan Hunt. However, what really stood out to me in The Final Reckoning was its submarine scene – it was thrilling and showcased Tom Cruise’s physical prowess. The only thing that could have made it better for me was if he hadn’t spoken during the sequence.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’s Submarine Sequence Is A Beautiful Silent Sequence

The promotional hype for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” primarily centered around its thrilling climactic action scene. Notably, Tom Cruise executes a daring stunt by hanging from not just one, but two biplanes in this sequence, an act that undeniably showcases incredible skill. Nevertheless, I believe the standout moment of the film is actually another key sequence where Tom Cruise manages to infiltrate a submerged submarine, a feat that truly outshines the plane stunt.

In the ensuing minutes of the film, it’s more like a silent movie sequence: Ethan Hunt is alone on screen without anyone to interact with, so he operates in complete stillness. He embarks on his search for what he needs, all done silently. The only audible sounds are the submarine moving and Tom Cruise’s quiet breaths.

This breathtaking spectacle seems to have been skillfully executed through a colossal spinning water vat. Reminiscent of a stunt from “Mission: Impossible,” it ranks among the daring feats like dangling from the Burj Khalifa or motorcycling off a precipice, yet I admire this moment more as it contributes significantly to the narrative, achieving so much with minimal sound.

In a world where chatter often reigns supreme, particularly in action flicks, it’s uncommon to find a film that harnesses the power of silence so effectively. As a spectator, I found myself utterly captivated by a character who communicates without uttering a single word. Every scene crackled with anticipation as we hung on every subtle movement, left guessing what would unfold next, making each moment all the more electrifying due to the suspense.

And then the tension is broken as soon as Tom Cruise opens his mouth.

Tom Cruise’s Single Line Of Dialogue Breaks The Magic

Towards the finale, Ethan Hunt finds himself stuck within a submarine. In an attempt to escape, he decides to use one of the torpedo tubes as an exit option. Remarkably, we anticipate this move prior to its execution because just before doing so, he utters “Torpedo tubes” to no one in particular.

These two expressions really grated on my nerves. They seem completely superfluous, and what’s more frustrating is that their presence in a dialogue-free scene makes them glaringly obvious.

It seems this additional detail added later in post-production is likely included due to uncertainties about clarity during initial viewings, either from genuine audience confusion or studio concerns. However, it’s frustrating because the information appears unnecessary and could have been omitted.

Are the two lines of dialog causing me an unwarranted frustration? Indeed, it is so. I could not care less about them ordinarily, but they have managed to irritate me. These words tarnish what should be a flawless scene in my eyes. If only they had never been included.
