In the 21st century, another example of a legacy sequel was “Blade Runner 2049”, which hit theaters 35 years after the original movie. These films tend to be successful in theaters, as they appeal to both new and returning audiences who enjoy a bit of nostalgia.

Despite the long wait, it garnered massive acclaim upon its release, raking in nearly $1.5 billion. The film was also nominated for multiple Oscars, demonstrating both its critical and commercial success. Interestingly, Cruise has now confirmed that he is actively working on another sequel following “Top Gun: Maverick.
