Tom Cruise Was ‘Protective’ of Gina Gershon While Filming Her First Sex Scene, Even When She ‘Kneed Him’ in the Face: ‘I Just Broke His Nose’

As a seasoned movie buff with a keen eye for Hollywood history and a soft spot for the industry’s underdogs, I find myself deeply moved by Gina Gershon‘s journey. Her story is a testament to resilience and the courage to follow one’s convictions, even when faced with adversity from those closest to you.

On “Watch What Happens Live,” host Andy Cohen questioned Gina Gershon about rumors she had romantic encounters with Tom Cruise. They played opposite roles in the 1988 film “Cocktail.” During a steamy scene, Gershon recalled unintentionally causing Tom Cruise some discomfort when she almost broke his nose. This was her debut love scene in a movie. Gershon added that Cruise provided excellent support throughout the filming process.

“Gershon stated that he was dealing with a gentleman, he explained. Under the covers, Gershon shared that he mentioned his ticklish nature. ‘Absolutely not, don’t do that,’ he recounted saying. In one swift moment, it seemed like the man wanted to elicit a response, and he playfully jabbed at Gershon’s stomach. Reflexively, Gershon kicked him in the nose. ‘Oh my goodness! I think I just broke Tom Cruise’s nose,’ he exclaimed. Cruise responded with an apology, claiming it was his fault. He was incredibly concerned for Gershon’s well-being.”

“In the movie titled ‘Cocktail,’ Tom Cruise portrayed a business student who took up bartending to cover his expenses. Joining him were Bryan Brown and Elisabeth Shue. Despite receiving unfavorable criticisms, it managed to rake in an impressive $171 million at the global box office. This film was released during the peak of Cruise’s fame in Hollywood, following the successes of ‘Risky Business’ and ‘Top Gun.’ “

As a budding film enthusiast back then, I must admit I was relatively green to the glamour of Tinseltown. However, things took a dramatic turn in the ’90s, with my name becoming more familiar and my performances in movies like “Bound” earning critical acclaim. What made this role particularly intriguing was that it centered around a lesbian relationship, a fact I only recently disclosed on the “It Happened in Hollywood” podcast. Interestingly, I was advised against taking this part by my agents, who cautioned me that playing such a character could potentially jeopardize my career in Hollywood because it was considered risky or taboo at the time.

“The script was fantastic and it was clear the directors were talented, but my agents warned me against doing the movie, stating that I was risking my career and might never work in the industry again,” Gershon explained further, mentioning that her agents threatened to terminate their representation if she accepted the role.

“Gershon clarified, ‘I basically said if you can’t help me out, I’ll find assistance elsewhere.’ No ill will intended, she added. She strongly supported the script penned by the Wachowskis. ‘Initially, it’s narrow-minded to label this as a lesbian film,’ she explained. ‘Yes, they are lesbians, but fundamentally, this isn’t just about lesbians; it’s about trust.'”
