With the “Mission: Impossible” saga drawing to a conclusion, I’m eagerly preparing for the unveiling of my upcoming blockbuster endeavors, Tom Cruise here.
During an interview with Today Show Australia, Tom Cruise mentioned that he and his crew are actively developing ideas for possible continuations of “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022) and the high-speed drama “Days of Thunder” from 1990.
Tom Cruise mentioned that there are numerous story ideas being considered and explored. He explained that it took him 35 years to finalize ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, so he’s also brainstorming about ‘Days of Thunder’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ currently.
He went on to say, “There are many other movies we’re currently engaged in. I’m either filming a movie, preparing a movie, or promoting a movie. I’ve just wrapped up a movie with Alejandro Iñárritu, who directed ‘The Revenant,’ and it will be released soon. Working with him was truly remarkable, and Christopher McQuarrie and I are always juggling multiple film projects.
In May 2022, the movie titled ‘Maverick’ was unleashed and swiftly turned into a blockbuster, amassing an impressive total of $1.49 billion globally in ticket sales. Compared to this, the film ‘Days of Thunder,’ which followed the original ‘Top Gun’ by four years, garnered $157 million worldwide during its theater run (without being adjusted for inflation).
Discussions about Tom Cruise reprising his role for “Days of Thunder 2” started in November 2024, with Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of “Top Gun: Maverick”, also involved in negotiations. The first movie introduced us to Cole Trickle, a rebellious racecar driver who was selected to join a new NASCAR team led by Harry Hogge, a former racing legend played by Robert Duvall.
In January 2024, it was reported by EbMaster that “Top Gun 3” was being developed at Paramount Pictures. The screenplay will be written by Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote the previous film, and there are plans to bring back director Joseph Kosinski for this upcoming installment, according to sources.
According to Cruise’s announcement, his upcoming movie remains untitled and will be directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Back in October 2024, EbMaster revealed that filming would commence in the UK as soon as November of the same year. Besides Cruise, actors such as Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, and Sophie Wilde are also part of the cast.
