Tom Cruise Says Goodbye to ‘Mission: Impossible’ as ‘Final Reckoning’ Debuts Crazy Stunt Footage at CinemaCon

In every “Mission: Impossible” film, Tom Cruise seems to discover innovative methods to come close to meeting his end on camera.

In his role as Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise has hung off trains, aircraft, and even the Burj Khalifa’s side, continually outdoing himself with death-defying stunts. Given this track record, it’s no wonder that “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” sees him taking risks yet again. In a recently unveiled scene at CinemaCon on Thursday, Cruise can be seen clinging for survival to the wing of an airborne biplane as it flies upside down.

Moreover, he successfully persuaded the United States Navy to push their limits, racing against time as he strives to save humanity. A skeptical government official questions, “Did you really get an aircraft carrier from them?” in amazement, during a scene within the latest preview.

According to its title, “The Final Reckoning” is said to mark Tom Cruise’s farewell from the espionage series. This film is a sequel to “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” which was released in 2023 and grossed over $570 million worldwide, but fell short of expectations at the box office due to increased production costs resulting from COVID-19 shutdowns and resuming filming during the pandemic.

Title “The Final Reckoning” sees the return of franchise veterans Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, alongside Esai Morales, who played the main human adversary in the previous film (with an AI being the primary antagonist). The ensemble also includes Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett, and Rolf Saxon, all of whom have appeared in prior films. Joining them are newcomers Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Nick Offerman. Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed three “Mission: Impossible” movies before, takes on directorial duties again. He collaborated with Erik Jendresen to pen the script.

Paramount will release “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” in theaters on May 23, 2025.
