As a passionate film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: Delving into the depths of intimacy, my real-life partners Alison Brie and Dave Franco push past comfort zones in the intriguing trailer for “Together,” Neon’s innovative take on codependency, served with a chilling twist of body horror.
At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the horror film “Together” was a significant standout, debuting in the Midnight section to both acclaim and controversy. The movie, directed by Michael Shanks for his feature-length directorial debut, was one of the rare films at the festival that triggered a bidding war among studios. According to EbMaster, the final sale price surpassed $17 million, making it one of the largest deals in Sundance’s history. Besides A24, other studios were also interested in acquiring the rights to this film.
At the festival, EbMaster’s main film critic, Owen Gleiberman, commented in his review that “Together,” a film exploring a heavy topic like love through the lens of body horror, is a movie that people can enjoy without it getting overly dramatic.
Or:
In his festival review, EbMaster’s chief film critic, Owen Gleiberman, stated that “Together,” being a body-horror movie centered around love, manages to maintain a lighthearted tone, making it enjoyable for viewers without becoming overly serious.
Following the addition of the new feature, Neon scheduled an August 1 premiere date for its theatrical release. This independent distributor has previously achieved horror success during summertime with last year’s “Longlegs,” a low-budget occult thriller directed by Osgood Perkins. This film earned over $74 million in North America and an impressive global total of $126 million.
Even though a significant part of the enjoyment from watching “Together” comes from the fact that its stars are actually married in real life, Brie Larson and James Franco have collaborated on numerous projects prior. They appeared together in films like “The Little Hours,” “The Disaster Artist,” “Horse Girl,” and “The Rental.” Interestingly, Brie Larson also co-wrote the script for “Horse Girl,” while James Franco made his directorial debut with “The Rental.” The most recent project they worked on together was 2023’s “Somebody I Used to Know,” where they both contributed as co-writers; Brie starred in the film, and James Franco directed it.
