Todd Howard, head of Bethesda, explained why some of the most noticeable bugs from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remained in the updated version, even including the well-known misspoken line of dialogue.
After nearly a year since its quiet release, fans widely consider Oblivion Remastered a perfect example of how to remaster a classic game. It updated the graphics and added helpful modern features to a nearly 20-year-old RPG, all while preserving the original game’s essence.
Unlike most remakes that aim to fix problems in the original game, Bethesda decided to keep many of the famous glitches. One example is a funny voice line from the character Tandilwe, where you can hear the actor stumble and ask to redo a line before actually saying it.
Todd Howard says voice line mistake is part of Oblivion’s “character”
Todd Howard recently explained and justified the choice to leave certain funny glitches in the game, noting that fixing them wasn’t always possible.
He explained in an interview with GamesRadar+ that many decisions about game design are open to interpretation. He specifically mentioned a challenging issue – figuring out which gameplay elements players will actually attempt, using an example where players could stand on certain objects. He added that fixing problems related to that particular feature is surprisingly complex.

He’s probably talking about a glitch where the camera gets positioned too high after you stand on something. This makes it seem like your character is much bigger than everyone else.
Howard believes these quirks actually add to Oblivion’s appeal, and he also brought up the famous incorrect voice line.
He said it was okay to keep the mistake in the voiceover. ‘Things like that actually add to the game’s personality,’ he explained. ‘It’s fine – just leave it in.’
Some players hoped the remaster would fix certain quirks, but others were glad to see them remain. The repeated voice line, in particular, has become a beloved and memorable part of The Elder Scrolls experience, and many would have been disappointed if it had been changed when revisiting the Temple of the One.
