Today Is Your Last Day To Play Dauntless

Today marks the final opportunity to engage with Dauntless, the captivating free-to-play monster hunting game, before it permanently ceases operation. First introduced in 2019, the game has provided countless hours of entertainment for many players. However, following a shift in studio ownership and significant job cuts, access to Dauntless will no longer be available after today.

Initially launched in 2019 following a little over a year in early access, Dauntless was widely praised for its user-friendly design, often likened to Monster Hunter. It supports cross-progression and cross-play, meaning players can enjoy the game across PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms.

2023 saw me, as a devoted fan, quietly witness Phoenix Labs being scooped up by Forte Labs – a trailblazer in blockchain technology. Coincidentally, around the same timeframe, Phoenix Labs trimmed approximately 9% of its workforce. Regrettably, this was just the beginning. Layoffs continued in 2024, and a game cancellation ensued, setting the stage for the most recent wave of layoffs that swept through the company. The pièce de résistance? Just before the announcement that Dauntless would be winding down operations.

Initially available only on the Epic Games Store for PC, Dauntless became accessible on Steam towards the end of 2024. This decision led to the game receiving negative reviews on Valve’s platform. Simultaneously, the release corresponded with the unveiling of the Dauntless: Awakening update, which players criticized as a “monetization playground” due to the introduction of new in-game transactions.

As an ardent fan, I must confess that Dauntless has predominantly garnered unfavorable reviews on Steam. However, as we approach its closure, the more recent comments have taken on a more optimistic tone, with long-time players sharing fond memories of their gaming experiences. Contrastingly, on the Epic Games Store, where it’s been available for an extended duration, Dauntless boasts a commendable 4.5-star rating.

Dauntless is set to permanently close down at 11:45 PM PST on May 29th. Phoenix Labs has declared that the game will no longer be accessible for play past this moment, implying there’s no intention of providing an offline version as a replacement.
