TLOU Boss Says He Never Felt Confident With A Game He’s Led Except For This One

Neil Druckmann is recognized as a significant figure in the gaming world, having contributed to writing and directing games within successful series such as The Last of Us and Uncharted, both critically and financially. However, Druckmann doesn’t always feel assured about his work during its creation – except for one instance.

At a recent DICE Summit, attended by VentureBeat, Druckmann expressed his confidence only during the development of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. He mentioned that for other projects where he was in charge, he often doubted our chances of success. However, you have to push through those doubts, he said.

As a fervent admirer, I can relate to Druckmann’s apprehensions about the vastness of every undertaking, encompassing teams and substantial budgets. It’s not just the weight of it all, but the lack of a set recipe for triumph. Success is never guaranteed, and all we can do is rely on our gut feelings, heed the counsel of my team, and have faith in the journey itself.

At Naughty Dog, the “method” refers to their collaborative approach and the way they refine concepts, according to Druckmann. This includes brainstorming ideas, working in unison with other studios, and continuously revising their work.

He explained that our initial concept is rarely the most exceptional one. We often need to develop six more ideas before we stumble upon something original and intriguing. The early ones might seem familiar or repetitive, but they serve a purpose. This encourages us to delve deeper. We understand that some of our work will inevitably be discarded. This aspect can sometimes be disheartening for team members and ourselves. However, persisting through this process repeatedly is how we overcome our reservations. After all, doubts are always present.

Druckmann emphasized the importance of having a schedule for his workflow, even though he may not particularly enjoy following a rigid one. He explained, “It’s essential for me and beneficial for the team too, because it’s not only me who needs this structure. It’s just how Naughty Dog operates – we’re meticulous and without it, we’d simply continue refining our work.

Neil Druckmann is currently overseeing Naughty Dog’s new intellectual property titled “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,” and there’s a possibility he might also be involved in developing “The Last of Us Part 3.” In addition to his gaming projects, Druckmann collaborated with Craig Mazin on the second season of “The Last of Us” which will air on HBO starting April.
