Tired Of Mashing Buttons In Donkey Kong Bananza? Get A Controller With Turbo

After just a few days since the release of Donkey Kong Bananza, you might find yourself, much like me, wildly swinging Donkey Kong’s fists to unearth bananas, treasure chests, and secret areas filled with Golden Bananas (also known as Banandium Gems). The excitement of hearing “Oh! Banana!” and witnessing Donkey Kong’s eyes sparkle like he’s seeing his newborn child for the first time never fails to bring a smile to my face. However, despite Donkey Kong’s fist’s steel toughness, my thumbs are not. The constant button-bashing to create tunnels can become quite tiring. If you find this to be true or if your thumbs start to ache, I would suggest investing in a second Nintendo Switch controller with a turbo function, preferably one that also allows for remapping buttons for added comfort.

If you’re not familiar with the term “turbo buttons”, they allow you to simulate rapid button presses by simply holding down a button instead. For instance, in Donkey Kong Bananza, activating turbo function lets you keep pressing the Y button, causing DK to repeatedly swing his fists, making him behave like a power drill. I’ve not used this feature much before, but it can be quite handy for games that seem like they require rapid button presses.

In summary, there are numerous third-party controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2 with turbo buttons available. Regrettably, the enhanced Switch 2 Pro Controller is not among them. However, one of the few exceptions is the Horipad Turbo, which is officially licensed by Nintendo and includes the new C button for GameChat, a feature exclusive to first-party or licensed controllers. The Horipad Turbo retails at $40, with the downside being that it’s a wired controller. Interestingly, this product shares many similarities with the original Horipad Turbo, an affordable wired controller for the Switch priced at $21 (originally $30) and compatible with the Switch 2, albeit lacking the C button.

Prior to purchasing the Pro 2, it’s worth noting that the 8BitDo Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad will be available starting August 12. This new model boasts improved sticks and triggers, plus four additional buttons similar to those found on the Ultimate 2. Additionally, it features magnetic face buttons. A tool provided with the gamepad allows you to detach and reposition the ABXY buttons, a feature designed primarily for players who wish to adjust their layout to mimic the Xbox controller setup when playing games on PC or other platforms. However, this feature could also be beneficial for Switch games. In Bananza, you can switch jump and punch buttons, but if you prefer swapping X/Y, say, you can reassign the inputs and relocate the buttons accordingly. This way, you can play with your preferred layout without compromising the precision of on-screen button indicators.

Two alternative 8BitDo controllers that work with Switch 2, offering turbo functionality, are the affordable Ultimate 2C and the SNES-style SN30 Pro. However, neither of these controllers come equipped with back buttons, custom profiles, or comprehensive button mapping. Given this, they might not be my top picks for the game Donkey Kong Bananza. Despite lacking some advanced features, the Ultimate 2C offers two additional remappable shoulder buttons and retails for just $30, making it a fantastic budget-friendly choice for a controller.

When you buy one of the controllers listed, it’s advisable to update its firmware first for compatibility with Switch 2. Notably, these controllers can wirelessly connect to a PC, Mac, Steam Deck, and various mobile devices. The Ultimate 2, Ultimate, and Pro 3 offer both 2.4GHz and Bluetooth wireless connections, while the rest are only compatible with Bluetooth.

For gameplay in Donkey Kong Bananza, I’ve found the additional features of the Ultimate 2 particularly beneficial compared to its previous versions and the Switch 2 Pro Controller. Notably, the Ultimate 2, like the Pro 3, offers four customizable buttons instead of the two available on their predecessors. Additionally, it includes a pair of back triggers and two shoulder buttons, resulting in six total top buttons for enhanced control. The upgrade from two to four additional buttons is significant since you can assign ABXY to the back/shoulder buttons, allowing you to maintain your thumb on the right stick at all times. Given that Bananza’s intricate tunnel terrain requires near-continuous camera movement, one of my customized control layouts eliminates the need for face buttons entirely.

As a gamer, I’ve been thrilled to discover the dual trigger modes in my new 8BitDo controllers. By nature, these triggers function like conventional ones we all know. However, a simple switch flip on the back transforms them into microswitch buttons. This flexibility is a game-changer! For instance, with the 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2, I can customize every input on PC, Mac, and Android devices. In Bananza, I’ve assigned the triggers to actions like jump or punch for easier control. The app also offers features to tweak trigger/stick sensitivity, rumble intensity, and even adjust the RGB lighting rings – just for some added style!

When you opt for third-party controllers such as those produced by 8BitDo, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Firstly, these controllers lack the C button for GameChat and NFC functionality for Amiibo. Secondly, while their adjustable rumble motors are decent, Nintendo’s HD Rumble technology offers a superior experience. If you value those specific features, I would suggest going with the Switch 2 Pro Controller instead. However, if additional customizable options appeal to you more, then the Ultimate 2 might be a better fit compared to Nintendo’s controller.

More Switch 2 controllers with Turbo buttons

It’s worth noting that 8BitDo isn’t the sole third-party company crafting customizable controllers equipped with turbo buttons. On Amazon, you can also find various turbo-enabled Switch 2 controllers from other well-known brands such as EasySMX and GuliKit.

I haven’t tried out every one of these controllers, but I can confidently recommend the NYXI Warrior Lite and ManbaOne. The Warrior Lite is a high-end wireless controller modeled after the GameCube, offering customizable features such as adjustable back buttons, trigger locks, swappable Hall Effect sticks, and microswitch face buttons. On the other hand, the ManbaOne comes equipped with an internal display that allows for input configuration, profile creation, and control setting tweaks. It also boasts Hall Effect sticks and triggers, along with microswitch face buttons.
