As a longtime admirer of Timothy West‘s illustrious career, it is with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to this remarkable British actor who graced our screens and stages for over six decades. His life was not just a journey through various roles, but a testament to the enduring power of passion, dedication, and versatility in the world of entertainment.

90-year-old Timothy West, a well-known British actor renowned for his roles in popular U.K. soap operas like “Coronation Street” and “EastEnders,” passed away on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, his kids issued a statement verifying the news. They stated that he passed away peacefully in his sleep and was surrounded by loved ones – friends and family – at the time.

Originating from Bradford, West Yorkshire, England on October 20, 1934, West enjoyed a lengthy career in both theater and film. He was associated with the Royal Shakespeare Company for three consecutive seasons during the 1960s, consistently portraying prominent characters in productions of “Macbeth,” “Uncle Vanya,” and “King Lear” throughout his life.

Beginning in 1975, he made his debut on the big screen as King Edward VII in the TV series, where he played the character from age 23 until his demise. From 1983 to 1990, he starred as Bradley Hardacre in the comedy-drama “Brass,” and also appeared in the Agatha Christie series “Miss Marple” (1985) and the black comedy show “A Very Peculiar Practice.” Additionally, he was cast in several films, including Richard Attenborough’s “Cry Freedom” (1987), Luc Besson’s “The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc” (1999) and Richard Eyre’s “Iris” (2001).

In the early 2000s, West expanded his acting career into television. From 2007 to 2009, he played Geoffrey Adams in the BBC One sitcom “Not Going Out”. He then joined ITV’s soap opera “Coronation Street” in 2013 as Eric Babbage, a romantic interest for Sue Johnston’s character Gloria Price. The following year, he was seen in another soap, “EastEnders”, portraying Stan Carter, the father of Shirley (played by Linda Henry) and Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White).

Between 2014 and 2019, he was the host for Channel 4’s show “Great Canal Journeys,” where he sailed along with his wife and fellow actress Prunella Scales in narrowboats, exploring waterways across the U.K. and Europe. In more recent years, he portrayed Jeremy Lister, a British officer from the American Revolution era, on the historical drama series “Gentlemen Jack,” which ran from 2019 to 2022.

West leaves behind his beloved wife Scales, who they were married to for 61 years, as well as his sister Patricia, daughter Juliet, sons Samuel (also an actor) and Joseph, along with seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
