As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for Tim Burton’s unique storytelling and dark whimsy, I find myself both intrigued and somewhat disappointed by his recent statements regarding potential sequels to some of his classic films. On one hand, it’s refreshing to hear that he values the originality of these stories and doesn’t want to tarnish their legacies with unnecessary follow-ups. However, as someone who grew up watching “Edward Scissorhands” and marveling at Johnny Depp‘s captivating portrayal, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia at the thought of never seeing another adventure with that iconic character.
Tim Burton appears to have breathed life back into the star ghost from his 1988 comedy-horror film “Beetlejuice” in its latest sequel, yet this hasn’t inspired him to revive any of his other timeless works.
At the Marrakech International Film Festival on Saturday, as reported by IndieWire, Burton ruled out the prospect of creating a follow-up to the 1990 film “Edward Scissorhands,” in which Johnny Depp played the lead character.
Burton stated that there are specific movies he has no desire to create follow-ups for. He felt ‘that film’ didn’t need a sequel as it seemed like a standalone project. Similarly, he didn’t want to produce a sequel for ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’, as it too appeared to be a single, self-contained story. In my opinion, some stories are best enjoyed in their original form, and that is one of them.
Despite not having directed a film featuring Depp since 2012’s “Dark Shadows”, it’s worth noting that Depp has been one of Tim Burton’s most frequent co-workers throughout his career. Their collaborations span projects like “Edward Scissorhands”, “Dark Shadows”, “Ed Wood” (1994), “Sleepy Hollow” (1999), “Corpse Bride” (2005), “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (2005), “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (2007) and “Alice in Wonderland” (2010).
When questioned about a potential new project with Depp, Burton responded, “Oh, I’d definitely expect so.
He explained, “I rarely think, ‘I’ll use these specific actors.’ Instead, it depends on the project I’m handling. In essence, that’s what filmmaking is – a collaborative process involving exchanging and developing concepts with those nearby.
This year in September, Burton’s movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” was a massive success at cinemas. It started off strong by earning the second-highest September opening ever with a domestic total of $110 million, and eventually bringing in over $450 million worldwide.
The sequel to the movie “Beetlejuice” garnered mostly favorable feedback from both critics and viewers, as it brought Tim Burton back together with the original cast members Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. (Currently, the film boasts a 76% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “B+” grade from CinemaScore.)
In an interview with EbMaster, Burton discussed returning to the universe of “Beetlejuice” for the sequel. He expressed that it wasn’t like working on “Big Fish,” but he didn’t think he could have done this project earlier because at that time, sequels weren’t commonly discussed. However, revisiting it now was enjoyable for him as Lydia was a character he felt strongly connected to. He wondered about the fate of characters 35 years later, their journeys, and the Deetz family’s story. This idea resonated with him deeply, serving as the foundation for the sequel. As one grows from being a teen to an adult, what kind of journey does one embark on?
Burton went on to explain, “Working alongside Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, and Winona Ryder was extraordinary, yet peculiar. It was a mix of the emotional and the novel. With our fresh cast, I found it both moving and invigorating. I mostly chose not to revisit the original because I didn’t understand its initial success. I approached it as a project that demanded my full focus, without dwelling on its past. Just jump in and get it done – much like we did before.
