Tim Burton Says ‘I’m Sure There Will Be’ Another Johnny Depp Collaboration, Shuts Down Chances of ‘Edward Scissorhands’ Sequel: ‘Certain Things Are Best Left on Their Own’

As a devoted admirer of Tim Burton’s enchanting cinematic universe, I find myself both elated and perplexed by his latest statements regarding future collaborations with Johnny Depp. On one hand, it is heartening to know that the duo’s magical alliance may still have a few more chapters to unfold. On the other, the idea of Burton shying away from sequels for some of his most cherished creations leaves me feeling as if a piece of my childhood has been snipped away with Edward Scissorhands’ titular instrument.

Although Tim Burton revitalized the iconic character “Ghost With the Most” in the latest sequel of his 1988 comedy-horror movie “Beetlejuice,” it appears that this didn’t persuade him to return to the making of some of his other famous films.

During a Q&A at the Marrakech International Film Festival on Saturday (via IndieWire), Burton dismissed the possibility of developing a sequel to 1990’s “Edward Scissorhands,” which starred Johnny Depp as the titular role.

Tim Burton stated, “I’ve chosen not to create a follow-up for certain movies. I felt that the original ‘Sleepy Hollow’ or ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ were standalone stories, so I didn’t want to continue them with a sequel.

Despite not having directed a film with Depp since “Dark Shadows” in 2012, Depp continues to be one of Burton’s most frequent collaborators. They have worked together on various projects such as “Edward Scissorhands”, “Ed Wood”, “Sleepy Hollow”, “Corpse Bride”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” and “Alice in Wonderland”.

When queried about a potential future collaboration with Depp, Burton responded, “Oh, absolutely, I think so.

He stated, “I don’t typically think, ‘I’ll utilize these specific actors.’ Instead, it’s usually dependent on the project I’m engaged with. After all, that’s what filmmaking is essentially about – teamwork and exchanging creative thoughts with those around you.

This year in September, Burton’s movie titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” turned out to be a blockbuster success. Upon its release, it secured the second-largest September opening ever, earning an impressive $110 million domestically. Eventually, its earnings surpassed $450 million at box offices worldwide.

The “Beetlejuice” sequel, featuring the return of Tim Burton’s original cast members Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, has largely garnered favorable responses from both critics and viewers. (The movie currently boasts a 76% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a “B+” grade from CinemaScore.)

In a conversation with EbMaster, Burton expressed his excitement about returning to the universe of “Beetlejuice” for the upcoming sequel. He mentioned that although it wasn’t like working on “Big Fish”, he felt that the timing was right because earlier, the idea of a sequel hadn’t even crossed his mind. However, revisiting the character of Lydia, whom he always had a strong connection with, was rewarding. Burton wondered about the fate of characters 35 years later, their journeys, and what became of the Deetz family. This emotional curiosity served as the foundation for the story’s direction. As one grows from being a teenager to an adult, what kind of journey does one embark on?

Burton went on to say, “Then, working alongside Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, and Winona Ryder – a group I adore – was both peculiar yet enchanting. With our fresh cast, there was an undertone of emotion, but also something novel. I chose not to revisit the original film much, mainly because I wasn’t sure what made it so popular in the first place. So, I approached it as a project that required no further contemplation. Jump in and complete it swiftly – just like we did before.
