In an intriguing disclosure, Tim Allen hinted at an unexpected focus for the upcoming Toy Story 5, indicating that a beloved character other than Buzz or Woody might take center stage. The Toy Story saga, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2025, remains one of the most financially successful and critically acclaimed animated film series ever produced. Despite three decades passing, this franchise continues to thrive. Scheduled for release on June 19, 2026, Toy Story 5 has sparked curiosity among fans who worry it might offer more of the same. However, it seems Pixar plans to mix things up by swapping the primary character.
In a chat with WIBV, as reported by Deadline, Tim Allen (the voice actor of Buzz Lightyear) shared some exciting news about Toy Story 5. This upcoming film will primarily focus on Jessie, the cowgirl doll voiced by Joan Cusack, who was first introduced in Toy Story 2. Additionally, Allen hinted that the movie will bring Woody and Buzz Lightyear back together after their friendship ended at the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
I can share with you that the story revolves mainly around Jessie. Tom Hanks’ character and mine, Woody, go through a reunion. There’s also an incredible opening scene involving Buzz Lightyear. I can disclose that much, but I’m unable to reveal any more details.
Jessie Makes Sense as the New Lead for ‘Toy Story 5’
It’s intriguing news that the fifth installment of Toy Story will center around Jessie. Since the series debuted, it has primarily revolved around Woody and Buzz Lightyear, with Woody holding the leading role in both Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4. Even in Toy Story 4, where Bo Peep’s role was expanded due to her absence in Toy Story 3, Woody and Buzz remained the main characters. However, making Jessie a more significant character for Toy Story 5 seems logical considering the narrative direction.
In “Toy Story 4”, it was clear that Bonnie preferred Jessie over Woody as her favorite toy. With “Toy Story 5” seemingly exploring children’s increasing fascination with electronic gadgets like tablets and smartphones, this shift could potentially widen the gap between Jessie and Bonnie, rekindling some of the abandonment issues highlighted in “Toy Story 2”. Given that Jessie had a lesser role in “Toy Story 4”, similar to Bo Peep, the upcoming sequel seems to be providing more focus on her character. Interestingly, Jessie has been the main character in a Toy Story project before – she was the central figure in the 2013 Halloween special, “Toy Story of Terror”.
It’s quite probable that Woody and Buzz will continue to play significant roles in the upcoming Toy Story movie, given they are the headliners. However, Pixar has a history of changing the main protagonist for sequels, as seen in Mater (Cars 2), Dory (Finding Dory), Mike Wazowski (Monsters University), and Elastigirl (Incredibles 2). It appears that Toy Story 5 may follow this pattern.
