TikTok is implementing a significant update to its privacy settings, enabling parents to monitor their children’s usage and restrict access if necessary.
For several years now, social media services have been introducing extra safety measures, particularly for users below the age of eighteen. Features such as setting daily usage limits and restricting access to specific content have gained significant popularity.
TikTok has adopted certain security measures, yet it lags slightly behind in offering some widely-used safety features.
Until now, it was different. However, the platform recently announced that they will grant parents the ability to monitor which TikTok accounts their kids are viewing and following, along with setting screen time limits.
TikTok’s Family Pairing lets you check who kids are following
Indeed, TikTok is implementing changes across Europe, aiming to improve family planning features. This includes introducing Time Away settings and Family Pairing options.
With this feature, parents can view who their kids are interacting with on TikTok, including those who follow their child’s account, and vice versa. Additionally, they’ll have access to information about any accounts their teenager has chosen to block.
By gaining more insight into their teen’s online connections, parents can continue having discussions with them and assist in building essential digital know-how,” the platform explained.
With Time Away, parents can establish a usage schedule for their kids on TikTok, effectively blocking the app during school hours. However, teens have the option to ask for additional time, though it’s ultimately the parents who decide.
These characteristics seem designed primarily for teenagers and young adults, yet they’re rather covert. It’s likely that they have backup accounts ready as a precaution against being monitored.
Immediately, the rollout will start in Europe. People in the U.S. and other distant locations might need to be patient for a short while longer.
