A mother who used to brag about getting £2K in UK benefits while residing overseas, is currently enduring a harsh punishment in a Thai jail, having exceeded the duration of her visa stay.
Ellis Matthews, a popular TikToker from the U.K., recently disclosed that she was detained in Thailand due to overstaying her visa, contradicting speculations that she had been living lavishly abroad by using UK government benefits.
A woman who became well-known on TikTok by showcasing what seemed like her perfect life in Southeast Asia is currently facing a difficult predicament, locked up in a Thai prison that she refers to as “a living hell.
Matthews and her four-year-old boy, Cairo, are being held together with sixteen other women and their kids in a cramped prison cell, due to the lack of space. This facility has unsanitary conditions, lice problems, and scarce resources at its disposal.
“My skin is covered in rashes, both me and my son have got lice, terrible insect bites and there’s rats running around,” she told MailOnline. She claims they survive on lumpy rice and “rat or pigeon” meat while enduring constant noise and stifling heat.
TikToker says she never got UK benefits while in Thailand
Matthews’ arrest followed accusations of human trafficking and child abuse, which she attributes to misinformation spread by her TikTok videos.
In those videos, she claimed to receive £2,300 per month in UK benefits for “six mental disorders” to fund her life abroad. Now, the 32-year-old admits the claims were fabricated to boost her follower count and monetize her account.
“These videos were just a joke. The truth is that I never got any UK benefits while in Thailand, not a single penny,” she told MailOnline. “I was just lying in my videos to get more followers and make some money.”
The TikToker previously appeared on ‘Judge Rinder’ claiming to have squandered a £6 million fortune, but she admitted that was all made up as well. However, she says it is true she once received £1.6 million from a lawsuit against Lancashire authorities, which she has since spent.
Matthews states that she’s unable to purchase a flight back to the United Kingdom because of limitations on her banking account. However, Thai officials assert that she’s free to depart once she has a plane ticket. Nevertheless, Matthews is concerned that child services might seize her son if she goes back.
“All I want is to live peacefully with my baby,” she said, adding that she would prefer to move to Cambodia or Turkey, despite Thai officials insisting she can only return to the UK as a British national.
The TikTok user has proposed renouncing her British nationality as a means of avoiding having to return, pledging to defend her own and her child’s welfare instead.
