TikTok reached a settlement just before jury selection was set to begin in a lawsuit claiming the app is addictive.
TikTok has recently undergone significant changes. In January 2026, the U.S. portion of the popular video app was bought by a group of American investors and established as a new company called TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC.
Okay, so there was a lot of talk about banning this app because some politicians were worried about national security. We all thought that was kinda scary! Thankfully, they worked out a deal to avoid that. But now, things are even more frustrating. After a power outage at one of their data centers, the app has been super glitchy and a lot of us can’t even use it. It’s been a mess, honestly!
Only a day after the recent disruption, TikTok reached an out-of-court settlement to prevent a trial concerning claims of social media addiction.

TikTok narrowly avoids taking social media addiction suit to trial
I’m really following this case – it’s set to start on January 27th. This 19-year-old, ‘KGM’, is claiming that TikTok, along with companies like Meta, Snapchat, and Google, deliberately designed their apps to be super addictive and keep people scrolling forever. It’s a pretty big deal, honestly!
According to Reuters, KGM states she developed a social media addiction early in life and believes the apps’ potentially addictive designs contributed to her depression and suicidal thoughts.
TikTok settled its legal dispute with KGM just as the trial was about to begin, but the details of the agreement haven’t been made public.
The Social Media Victims Law Center told the BBC that both sides have reached a friendly agreement to resolve the issue.

Matthew Bergman, one of KGM’s attorneys, also spoke out about the suit in a statement to the BBC.
He explained that too many children in the US, the UK, and globally are struggling with the harmful effects of addictive social media algorithms, much like the child known as KGM. These platforms often expose children to these algorithms without their awareness.
TikTok has been the subject of multiple lawsuits, including this one, stemming from the tragic deaths of children who participated in dangerous challenges they discovered on the app.
