TikTok Has Another 75 Days To Find A Buyer, Trump Says; Walmart Considering A Bid

The future of TikTok in the U.S. remains uncertain at this time, as President Donald Trump has announced he will sign an executive order extending its operation within the country for another 75 days. This comes amid rumors of Amazon and Walmart preparing to place bids to acquire the popular social media platform.

In January 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court validated TikTok’s ban, causing the platform to momentarily disappear. During this period, former President Trump postponed the deadline for TikTok to secure an American buyer from April 4th until June 18th. This extension has now been prolonged further by another 75 days.

Today, Trump expressed his intention to preserve the operation of TikTok within the U.S., stating that substantial advancements have been made in the effort to find a suitable buyer. He acknowledged, though, that more time is needed to solidify a deal, so he will be signing an executive order extending TikTok’s availability for at least 75 additional days.

Both Republicans and Democrats have voiced worries regarding national security due to TikTok being owned by a Chinese company, ByteDance. The specifics of how a potential sale of TikTok might transpire are unclear. This could involve the sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations, the entire platform, or some alternative arrangement other than a complete withdrawal by ByteDance.

ByteDance is holding steady and saying over and over that it will not sell.

Who Could Buy TikTok?

Who could potentially purchase TikTok if it goes up for sale? Previous reports suggest that Activision’s founder Bobby Kotick was gathering an investment group to possibly acquire TikTok. Additionally, Perplexity AI has mentioned a potential deal that would involve the US government owning half of TikTok. Lastly, Microsoft seems keen on another attempt to buy TikTok.

It has been revealed that both Amazon and Walmart have been considering or collaborating with other companies to potentially acquire TikTok. According to ABC News, Walmart was prompted to become involved because Amazon already had an interest, as they could theoretically market their products to TikTok’s vast user base if the deal went through.

Trump’s communication regarding TikTok is the newest headline illustrating how his policies are influencing entertainment goods and services. For instance, his recently declared tariffs have caused Nintendo to postpone Switch 2 pre-orders, raising concerns that the Switch 2 might cost more than initially expected.
