2. Wide demographic reach: Unlike some other platforms, TikTok has a broad user base that appeals to all age groups, making it an attractive choice for both content creators and viewers alike.
3. Engaging content: The short-form videos on TikTok have proven highly entertaining and engaging, encouraging users to spend more time on the platform and increasing the likelihood of them tuning into live streams.
4. Strong community focus: TikTok has fostered a vibrant and supportive community that encourages collaboration and interaction between creators and viewers, making it more likely for users to engage with live content.
5. Strategic partnerships: By partnering with popular influencers and brands, TikTok Live has been able to attract high-profile collaborations, driving increased viewership and engagement on the platform.
As of Q1 2025, YouTube Live has reigned supreme in the streaming sector, boasting approximately 15 billion hours viewed, whereas Twitch follows far behind in third place with around 4.847 billion hours, the lion’s share of which is attributed to gaming broadcasts.
As a dedicated user, I can’t help but find myself right smack dab in the middle of the TikTok phenomenon this year. This short-form video app has been on an impressive upward trajectory in 2025, particularly with its Live content. In fact, it’s soared an astounding 30% to a staggering 8.027 billion hours watched!
Through its live streaming of games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Garena Free Fire, it has seen significant success. Meanwhile, its real-life (IRL) content has also proven to be fruitful.
I recently had an engaging conversation with Nazar Babenko, StreamsCharts’ esteemed Product Manager, delving into the meteoric rise of TikTok, its impact on competing platforms, and whether it can sustain this rapid growth.
TikTok’s winning formula pushes it past Twitch
Babenko suggests that because TikTok is primarily designed for mobile devices, it enjoys a significant edge over its competitors.
TikTok’s success is significantly influenced by its mobile-focused design. This app is designed primarily for mobile use, which facilitates easy live streaming experiences, making it user-friendly for both viewers and content creators. It allows anyone to start a live stream quickly, thereby reducing the hurdles for participation,” he elaborated.
Compared to platforms like Twitch and YouTube, making a stream that captures viewers’ interest can be tough, but TikTok has an advantage – its unique algorithm.
Making content on this platform is effortless, and TikTok’s smart discovery feature greatly increases the number of people who watch live streams, particularly for new and less experienced streamers.
At the start of this year, the potential prohibition of TikTok in the U.S. was a widely discussed issue as the app’s continued existence seemed to be under significant risk.
As an avid follower, I personally think that the increased media buzz about a potential ban played a part in the 30% surge, as it stirred up user engagement while there was still time. However, it’s essential to understand that this wasn’t the sole factor behind its success.
The approach TikTok has taken with its content, particularly the growth of non-gaming content, plays a significant role. Additionally, popular games like Roblox and Minecraft among young U.S. audiences have been instrumental in establishing TikTok’s presence within the gaming sphere.
Furthermore, the app experienced a substantial increase of 40% in its Chat and Outdoor sections, contributing notably to reaching the 8 billion hours viewed landmark.
Twitch urged to diversify or be left in the dust
While live streaming content on Twitch continues to draw a huge audience, YouTube and TikTok see considerably larger viewership from non-gaming broadcasts.
As an avid user of Twitch, I firmly believe that prioritizing mobile experiences and enhancing mobile user interfaces should be a top priority for them. If they aim to compete with other leading platforms, this shift is crucial.

Babenko suggests that Twitch must enhance its creator tools and monetization methods to discourage creators from moving to platforms like Kick, TikTok, or YouTube. He also recommends that Twitch should focus on increasing localization in developing markets, particularly Southeast Asia and Latin America, given the growing trend of mobile-first viewing in these regions.
It appears rather unlikely that TikTok will surpass YouTube in popularity, considering YouTube’s extensive library of long-format videos, superior monetization options, sports coverage, and established global reputation. However, it’s essential not to underestimate TikTok’s potential for growth, as it currently caters more to the younger demographic.
Should TikTok sustain a 30% growth rate per quarter and enhance its creator resources and monetization options, it could significantly reduce the difference – especially among the youth demographic.
