The Minecraft Film has been thriving at cinemas, surpassing $870 million after approximately a month of screenings. Over the weekend, it encountered fresh competition from Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie, and here’s a breakdown of their opening weekends in the US and worldwide.
During the weekend of May 2-4, Thunderbolts earned an impressive $76 million at U.S. box offices for its opening weekend. To put that into perspective, The Minecraft Movie launched on April 4 and grossed a whopping $162.7 million worldwide in its first weekend, with the U.S. accounting for $162.7 million of that total. This past weekend was already the fifth week The Minecraft Movie has been playing in theaters, and it managed to rake in an additional $13.7 million in the U.S. During this weekend’s screenings, movie theaters hosted “block parties” and invited audiences to let loose.
In its initial weekend at the box office, Thunderbolts earned approximately $162.1 million globally; however, a Minecraft film managed to pull in an impressive $301 million during its opening weekend.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the U.S. box office earnings for Thunderbolts* surpassed predictions slightly, amounting to $76 million. The report suggests that the film’s success could be partially attributed to its ensemble cast featuring less prominent characters, contributing to its performance to date.
According to reports, the budget for producing Thunderbolts was approximately $180 million, while the budget for a Minecraft film stood at around $150 million.
Among video game movies, a Minecraft film ranks second in box office earnings, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie holding the top spot at approximately $1.3 billion. Meanwhile, another video game adaptation, Sony’s Until Dawn movie, is currently playing in theaters, having grossed $34.8 million globally on a reported budget of $15 million.
Unsurprisingly, Warner Bros. is reportedly close to announcing A Minecraft Movie 2.
