Despite having been in cinemas for just a few days, Marvel Studios has unexpectedly disclosed a significant plot twist for the upcoming MCU release titled Thunderbolts. The cast members have been gradually unveiling a vital aspect of the storyline, shedding light on the significance of the enigmatic asterisk that accompanies the name of the titular team. And, as many had predicted, it appears that there’s more to the title than initially met the eye…

Marvel has taken fans by surprise, swiftly unveiling that The Thunderbolts are actually a rebranding of The New Avengers. Actors have hinted at the film’s fresh title by tearing apart a poster segment in public. Meanwhile, Sebastian Stan, a recurring star and integral part of the MCU, has been seen switching posters to disclose the new title during his outings.

For quite some time now, people have pondered over the possibility that the asterisk in “Thunderbolts*” signified a title change, suggesting it could become either “New Avengers” or “Dark Avengers”. Yet, with the movie having barely been out for a week in cinemas, there’s a bit of puzzlement as to why this significant revelation has been confirmed so swiftly.

MCU Fans Left Confused & Disappointed by the Quick Reveal

One Marvel enthusiast remarked, ‘It seems premature, don’t you think? They could have delayed it by about a week.’ Another concurred, ‘Promoting a film with a title that gives away its plot and surprises…that sounds like an oversight.’

A fan expressed their disappointment by saying, “They’ve actually switched the ‘Thunderbolts’ title to ‘New Avengers’ officially, and some theaters are even following suit. If they were going to reveal it so soon, they could have just called it ‘The New Avengers’ from the start,” but it appears we may have all been mistaken. As Germain Lussier of Gizmodo clarifies, “‘The New Avengers’ isn’t the official title – it’s merely a clever marketing trick that seems to be working quite well. The movie is still officially known as ‘Thunderbolts’, no matter what you choose to call it!

It seems that although Thunderbolts might remain the formal title for the upcoming Marvel production, it’s also been referred to as The New Avengers by several sources like Fandango. This suggests that maybe the studio could have been more explicit in their communication about the title.

Under the direction of Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, the film Thunderbolts* ends with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Sentry (Lewis Pullman) banding together to form The New Avengers. Now headquartered at the Avengers Tower, the closing scenes show the team pondering trademark concerns regarding their team name. A post-credits scene hints that “The New Avengers” will make a comeback, setting the stage for their appearance in the forthcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

As I ponder over the title change, I can’t help but share director Jake Schreier’s insights. Essentially, he believes that if Val is attempting to deceive and present the New Avengers to the world, then why not us? After all, the asterisk has been associated with this movie for a whole year now. Ideally, it shouldn’t feel like a last-minute scheme—it should seem like a well-thought-out plan that we’ve been gradually preparing for.

Schreier noted that Marvel readily took to this approach, finding it quite engaging. In this realm, as Feige occasionally discusses, there are instances when they intentionally allowed information to slip and didn’t do so, which is intriguing.
