Note of Caution: This discussion encompasses plot points from the Thunderbolts*, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As shared by Sebastian Stan and Wyatt Russell, the initial version of the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene contained a segment that viewers did not get to see. Although Phase 5 has concluded with the latest Marvel Studios production, the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene hints at future excitement beyond Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and The Fantastic Four: First Steps this summer. It seems there was intended to be additional content featuring certain characters from the Thunderbolts* team in the post-credits scene, where they seem to witness the arrival of the Fantastic Four.
In their recent chat with Rotten Tomatoes, Stan and Russell discussed the significant Fantastic Four reference in the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene and their responses to witnessing that outcome. Although Stan admitted he hasn’t watched the movie yet, the two Marvel Cinematic Universe actors disclosed an exciting moment between Bucky Barnes and John Walker that was initially included in the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene but was cut from the cinematic release.
Sebastian Stan: Since I haven’t seen it yet, did our thing make it?! (To Wyatt Russell) The four?
Wyatt Russell: Honestly? No…it didn’t.
As Bucky Barnes, I found myself scratching my head when I saw this peculiar object approaching, muttering to myself, “‘What’s the purpose of this?’“.
Wyatt Russell chuckled and found himself asking, “‘Can you tell me what number four is?’“, which then transformed into a comedy skit reminiscent of Leslie Nielsen’s style.
Sebastian Stan: I’m sad it wasn’t there.
Wyatt Russell: I’m glad that element wasn’t present, as it would have prompted everyone to instantly desire to kill off my character.
What Sebastian Stan & Wyatt Russell’s MCU Story Means For Thunderbolts*
It’s quite amusing to imagine Bucky and John exchanging their witty banter in the Thunderbolts movie finale, but perhaps it was wise not to include it due to the film’s context. In the Thunderbolts storyline, these characters were assuming the public roles of the New Avengers, which carries a certain level of gravity and serves as a twist given Valentina’s manipulation for self-preservation. The post-credits scene of Thunderbolts was already rich in humor, so adding more jokes might have diluted the overall impact.
Including any of the Thunderbolts characters making humorous comments when observing the Fantastic Four’s spaceship might have weakened the hint at Marvel’s First Family’s arrival into the MCU this summer. Since their ship served as one of the most significant Easter eggs and references for the Thunderbolts, a lighthearted comment in that situation could have seemed contrived. Considering that the MCU has occasionally faced criticism for overusing humor, it was prudent that Stan and Russell’s scene, which would have added this beat, wasn’t included in the final production.
Our Take On Sebastian Stan & Wyatt Russell’s Thunderbolts* Story
The revelation that Stan and Russell shared a private scene in the Thunderbolts’ post-credits sequence suggests there might be a blooper reel or additional scenes included when the movie is distributed for home viewing, given that it could include this particular moment. Although another Thunderbolts 2 film doesn’t appear imminent, The New Avengers will reunite in Avengers: Doomsday, where they are expected to encounter the characters who were on the Fantastic Four spacecraft. Until then, audiences can rewatch Thunderbolts in theaters as they eagerly anticipate seeing them again during Phase 6.
