In the closing credits scene of the movie “Thunderbolts,” there were various changes and additions involving significant Marvel Cinematic Universe characters like Jonathan Majors’ character Kang the Conqueror. It is well-known that the post-credit sequences in Marvel Studios films often give clues about future events within their cinematic universe. Originally planned as the main antagonist for the Multiverse Saga, Kang was later removed from the MCU, causing “Thunderbolts” to create a different final sneak peek.
*Note: In this context, “Thunderbolts” is a fictional movie or project within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not an actual film title.
In discussions with IGN, co-writer Eric Pearson shared some characters that were part of different drafts for the post-credits sequences in the film. Originally, there was a scene planned that would have centered around the character Kang.
“So I was throwing together at the beginning a post-credit sequence that had to deal with Kang.”
As a film enthusiast, I must confess that the anticipated Thunderbolts’ scene didn’t materialize for various reasons. One significant factor was the conviction of Majors on assault charges in 2023, which ultimately led to his dismissal by Marvel Studios. The Hollywood strikes also halted Thunderbolts’ production for an extended period, around six months or so. During this hiatus, the MCU decided to rethink its strategy regarding Kang as the primary antagonist.
Although the post-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hinted at the Council of Kangs, Marvel Studios has been silent on this matter since then, giving us no confirmation about Kang’s role in future installments.
According to Pearson, a different take on the end credits scene for Thunderbolts unveiled additional details about Florence Pugh’s character, Yelena Belova, appearing in Hawkeye.
Reflecting on another thought, it seems my focus initially was on Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who sent Yelena after Clint Barton following the ‘Hawkeye’ series. However, as time moves on, I can’t help but wonder if the connection to events that transpired two or three years ago will still be recognized.
Fans were eagerly anticipating the possible return of Daniel Brühl’s character Baron Zemo in Thunderbolts, despite his actor stating he wouldn’t reprise the role. It was suggested that Zemo nearly found a way into the film through a post-credits scene, with the villain shown as orchestrating events from prison, symbolically “pulling the strings.
In a scene tagged as post-credits, which I wrote a very long time ago, Zemo was hinted to be similar to the mysterious character Keyser Söze. This implies he has been manipulating events from behind bars in some unknown fashion. However, I don’t believe this specific concept survived past the initial brainstorming phase of, “What if we try something like this?” followed by, “No, not quite that.
For anyone eager to catch the end-credits sequence of the last version of “Thunderbolts”, it’s recommended to go watch the film in theaters right now. Directed by Jake Schreier, this is the culminating movie of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5. The storyline features Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes (portrayed by Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) banding together in an unforeseen alliance, all under the watchful gaze of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis Dreyfuss.
Thunderbolts’ Post-Credit Scene Changed For The Better
Warning – The rest of this article contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*.
Since Marvel Studios first hinted at upcoming ventures via post-credit scenes in The Incredible Hulk, they have gained a reputation for thrilling and significant revelations that keep viewers hooked, even if it means waiting during the end credits.
This situation has prompted Marvel to make some groundbreaking cast choices and unveil new characters. However, in the aftermath of Endgame, several of these post-credit scenes have yet to be resolved within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which has diminished their impact a bit.
For the film “Thunderbolts”, directors Anthony and Joe Russo shot the post-credits scene just a few weeks before its premiere. This allowed for the second extended post-credits sequence, where the New Avengers discuss their conflict with Sam Wilson and witness the introduction of the Fantastic Four, to serve as a direct prelude for the next two Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
In the early stages of writing “Thunderbolts”, such an outcome would have seemed unlikely because the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has undergone significant changes over the years. Instead of Majors as Kang, the attention is now on Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Victor von Doom. Consequently, the final post-credits scene of “Thunderbolts” carries more significance since fans are aware that its implications will be addressed promptly in upcoming MCU films, rather than hinting at something that may never come to fruition.
