‘Thunderbolts’ Flies to $162 Million Globally, ‘Sinners’ Nears $250 Million Milestone

In the worldwide box office, ‘Thunderbolts‘ made a stunning impact, raking in approximately $162 million. Out of this total, an impressive $86.1 million came from sales in 52 different international locations.

The ticket sales for “Thunderbolts” are currently lower than those of February’s “Captain America: Brave New World” ($192 million). However, positive critic reviews and audience feedback for “Thunderbolts” could potentially boost its longevity. Conversely, “Brave New World” suffered greatly from negative word-of-mouth and quickly plummeted at the box office.

“Thunderbolts” is not selling as many tickets as “Captain America: Brave New World” did, but good reviews and audience feedback might help it last longer. On the other hand, “Brave New World” didn’t do well because people weren’t talking positively about it, causing it to flop at the box office.

The longevity of large screens is crucial due to Disney investing a total of $280 million in the production and promotion of “Thunderbolts,” a film focused on an unconventional team of main characters, featuring Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, and David Harbour as Red Guardian.

In the domestic market, “Thunderbolts” took the lead, earning an impressive $76 million. Internationally, its success was particularly noticeable in China ($10.4 million), the United Kingdom ($7.7 million), Mexico ($7.3 million), and Brazil ($4 million).

In other parts of the world, “Sinners” earned an additional $10.4 million across 71 markets, showing only a slight drop of 27% compared to the previous weekend. On the other hand, the R-rated vampire horror film has been a massive hit in North America with a total of $179.9 million so far. After three weekends on screen, “Sinners” is remarkably getting close to reaching $250 million worldwide, with global ticket sales currently at $236.7 million.

Moreover, during the weekend, “A Minecraft Movie” earned approximately $26.6 million overseas, raising its foreign earnings to a total of $475.2 million. This PG-rated film adaptation of a video game, featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, has amassed a global box office revenue of $873.4 million, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood release in 2021 so far.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement as “Thunderbolts” kicks off the much-anticipated summer blockbuster season! Hollywood heavyweights are gearing up to premiere fresh chapters in some of our beloved franchises, such as “Lilo & Stitch,” “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” and “Jurassic World Rebirth.” After a somewhat sluggish start to the year, these upcoming blockbuster contenders are hoping to breathe new life into cinema experiences.

2025 appears to be mirroring the pattern from the previous year: A sluggish start in the first quarter, but the movie industry picked up steam in April, thanks to releases like ‘Minecraft’ and ‘Sinners’. David A. Gross, who heads Franchise Entertainment Research, notes that the summer lineup is brimming with popular, mainstream films.
