‘Thunderbolts’ First Reactions: Florence Pugh Is ‘Superb’ in ‘Some of Marvel’s Darkest Material to Date’

The Marvel film “Thunderbolts” has been unveiled to movie journalists, and early responses label it a “daring exploration into themes of trauma, healing, and redemption.” Among the cast members, Florence Pugh, who debuted in Marvel’s “Black Widow” as Yelena and is now starring in her first MCU film following appearances in series like “Hawkeye,” seems to be the standout. Critics are praising her performance as “exceptional” and the one that “stands out the most” among the cast members.

According to Chief Editor Matt Neglia for Best Picture, “Thunderbolts” is among the darkest content Marvel has produced so far. This movie heavily relies on Florence Pugh’s powerful performance, as she shoulders most of the film’s dramatic burden. Lewis Pullman offers a nuanced portrayal of a conflicted character. The film might not be the most action-packed or humorous Marvel production, but its gritty aspects seem fitting for this group of flawed heroes.

*Thunderbolts” stands out from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films in numerous aspects, and its arrival couldn’t be more timely as the franchise is yearning for fresh perspectives and growth. It represents some of Marvel’s most somber content to date, tackling themes that are particularly relevant now.

Screenwriter Emily Murray praised “Thunderbolts” as “one of the finest Marvel Cinematic Universe films in quite some time.” She further stated that it’s filled with “a great deal of energy, charm, and delivers a deeply moving tale that resonates.” Adding a touch of personal experience, she mentioned that it even brought a tear to her eye. Particularly impressive was Florence Pugh’s performance, who according to Murray, simply stole the show.

Without a doubt, Thunderbolts ranks among the finest Marvel Cinematic Universe films in recent memory (and could even become one of my all-time favorites). It’s bursting with energy, charm, and tells a deeply moving story that resonates. A single tear was shed. Florence Pugh’s performance is exceptional, stealing the show effortlessly.

Critic Brandon Norwood remarks that the focus on character development and realistic action gives it a nostalgic feel of the classic Marvel series. He wishes it had been released earlier. Notably, the team’s dysfunctional dynamic also adds to its charm.

Astounded by how fantastic THUNDERBOLTS* turns out to be! The character development and practical action make it feel like the classic Marvel we’ve loved for over a decade. If only we could have experienced this sooner. Plus, the chemistry among this troubled team adds to its appeal.#Thunderbolts* #ThunderboltsMovie

The movie features a band of unconventional protagonists joining forces to confront a shared enemy. The cast includes Florence Pugh playing Yelena Belova, Lewis Pullman in the role of Sentry, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Sebastian Stan portraying Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Gaurdian, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster. Jake Schreier takes on the director’s chair while Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo contribute to the screenplay.

Marvel is pinning its hopes on the success of “Thunderbolts,” following the lackluster commercial and critical reception of “Captain America: Brave New World” in February. But if “Thunderbolts” doesn’t do well, there’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” to anticipate in July. Additionally, Marvel Studios has two highly anticipated “Avengers” sequels, “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” scheduled for release on May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027, respectively.

Before its release, Marvel is setting “Thunderbolts” apart as a unique superhero movie compared to their typical productions. In March, a trailer showcasing the cast and crew was screened in cinemas, many of whom have previously worked on films produced by A24. Even before this trailer premiered, director Schreier had already emphasized that “Thunderbolts” would be unlike Marvel’s usual projects.

At Comic-Con 2024, Schreier stated that Kevin Feige’s original aim was to create something unique. He explained, “If you can envision a Marvel film produced by those artists and blend the tones they typically use, then I believe our end product mirrors that vision.

“Thunderbolts” opens in theaters May 2 from Disney and Marvel Studios.

Thunderbolts stands out as one Marvel film that’s been particularly enjoyable lately, offering something fresh compared to many of their other projects. It boasts bravery, humor, exciting action sequences, and an emotional depth that catches you off guard.

#Thunderbolts” is unfiltered, laugh-out-loud, and strikingly human. It’s a daring exploration of pain, recovery, and redemption. Evidence that those once deemed flawed or disposable can transcend their past and become the unsuspected heroes. It’s rugged, heartfelt, and unlike anything you’ve seen before.

In this fresh take by Marvel, the upcoming movie offers a deeply human perspective, focusing on a complex anti-hero who grapples with flaws, brokenness, and regret. Sebastian Stan delivers an outstanding, standout performance, while Florence Pugh solidifies her status as the leading star of the emerging generation within the team.
