In contrast to expectations, the upcoming MCU film titled “Thunderbolts” won’t feature Baron Zemo. Despite sharing the same name as the comic book team, this movie is not a literal adaptation of the original group.
In the Marvel universe, the Thunderbolts were initially presented as a team of villains disguising themselves as heroes. Beetle took on the role of MACH-1, Goliath became Atlas, Moonstone was known as Meteorite, Screaming Mimi transformed into Songbird, and Fixer assumed the identity of Techno.
Moreover, the large-scale adaptation features characters such as Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), US Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Red Guardian (David Harbour).
However, let’s discuss the notorious antagonist, Baron Zemo. We had an opportunity to chat with Thunderbolts director, Jake Schreier, about the possibility of this Avengers-detesting character appearing in the latest film.
Why Baron Zemo won’t be in the MCU’s Thunderbolts
In our conversation, Schreier clarified that he never encountered a version where what was suggested was accurate, starting from the very first draft he read. Since then, there have been minor changes to some characters, but not significantly, and Baron Zemo was not included initially.
The filmmaker went on to say, “I know some corners of the internet are not so happy about that.”
Instead of having Helmut Zemo appear, it seemed fitting for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) to take over the role of assembling the superhero team, given the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s current storyline development and the absence of Zemo.
She’s quietly gathered this team together in various ventures, which makes her an ideal candidate for the position that Zemo previously occupied in the comic books.
Moreover, it’s worth noting that Zemo has previously made appearances in Captain America: Civil War and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with Daniel Brühl portraying the character. Introducing him again could potentially seem like a regression for a team aiming to establish a fresh persona.
The antiheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thunderbolts team already have their own histories, which makes them suitable for stepping into new roles.
Schreier found it amusing since he recognized that there were other parts of the internet that secretly hoped this was the initial series of Thunderbolts, where the villains pretended to be heroes.
In a sense, I believe our film pays tribute to this concept, yet we approach it from an unusual perspective.
Starting from May 1 in UK theaters, and May 2 in US theaters, you’ll be able to catch Thunderbolts! Until then, delve into the world of Sentry/The Void, explore all upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) releases, and take a peek at our list ranking MCU movies from best to worst.
