With Florence Pugh reprising her role as Yelena Belova in the upcoming Marvel Studios film “Thunderbolts”, fans finally get to delve deeper into the Black Widow storyline that was originally planned for Phase 4 of the MCU. English actress Florence Pugh first portrayed Yelena Belova, a fellow Black Widow assassin, in the 2021 film “Black Widow”. In this movie, it was revealed that she lived undercover in Ohio with Natasha Romanoff as her sister during their youth. This sibling bond continued into their adult lives and will be explored further in Jake Schreier’s upcoming “Thunderbolts” crossover, following the sacrifice of Natasha Romanoff in “Avengers: Endgame”.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I, Yelena Belova, will be taking center stage, following Natasha Romanoff’s journey from my debut in “Iron Man 2” up until her exit in “Endgame”. As part of the upcoming “Thunderbolts”, I’ll be joining forces with a group of antiheroes, stepping into an important role. With more focus on my character, Marvel Studios might delve deeper into Natasha Romanoff’s untold aspects and provide a comprehensive look at her character and backstory that we only glimpsed in “Avengers: Age of Ultron”. This could potentially fulfill the desire for a complete Black Widow narrative that fans have been eagerly waiting for.
Black Widow Didn’t Give Us The Natasha Romanoff Story We Wanted After Age Of Ultron
Natasha Romanoff Relived Her Troubled Past In Age Of Ultron
In the 2015 film “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, Scarlet Witch, played by Wanda Maximoff, confronted the Avengers with vivid and authentic visions. For Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanoff, this meant being transported to her past, re-experiencing her training in the Red Room and the forced sterilization ceremony. This was distressing for Romanoff, but intriguing for viewers, as it hinted at the desire to delve deeper into Black Widow’s background before she joined SHEILD. Unfortunately, the 2021 movie “Black Widow” did not fully explore this history as extensively as many had hoped.
Rather than briefly summarizing Natasha Romanoff’s past in Ohio and her Red Room training, the movie Black Widow begins with her family fleeing Ohio. The movie’s opening credits depict her time in the Red Room. The remainder of Black Widow unfolds between Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Unfortunately, Marvel Studios didn’t provide the Black Widow origin story we were hoping for, a true prequel, but the upcoming Thunderbolts film may rectify this.
*Note: Thunderbolts is a fictional superhero team in the Marvel Comics universe, and it has not yet been confirmed if a Thunderbolts movie is in development by Marvel Studios.
Thunderbolts* May Explore Yelena Belova’s History As A Black Widow In More Detail
Thunderbolts*’ New Trailer Reveals More About Yelena’s Past
It appears that the freshly released trailer for Thunderbolts hints at glimpses into Yelena Belova’s past, possibly revealed to her after she steps into the ominous darkness behind Lewis Pullman’s Void. These scenes might deliver a potent mix of intensity and emotion, potentially delving deeper into Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova’s shared history as Black Widow assassins. This could include flashbacks featuring a younger Yelena in the Red Room, and possibly more insights into Romanoff’s background, given that Scarlett Johansson is still involved with Thunderbolts as an executive producer.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff has been a central figure for a long time, but it’s Florence Pugh’s character, Yelena Belova, who will step into the limelight in the upcoming Thunderbolts. Although she doesn’t possess any supernatural abilities, Yelena Belova’s new incarnation of Black Widow, or perhaps White Widow, is expected to assume a leadership role within the Thunderbolts squad. This seems fitting given her ties to the Red Guardian, Valentina and Taskmaster. It’s exciting to think that Yelena will receive more focus in the MCU, and we hope to learn more about her past in Thunderbolts.
