Thousands of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles stolen in $1.4 million truck heist

A large number of Nintendo Switch 2 gaming systems were taken from a delivery truck when it was parked at a rest stop, according to authorities.

9NEWS stated that a burglary occurred on the morning of June 8th at Love’s Truck Stop in Bennett, Colorado, with the driver being outside the vehicle at the time.

The Aprahoe County Sheriff’s Office reports that a theft occurred involving 2,810 Nintendo Switch 2 gaming consoles from a truck.

To the officers, the driver admitted that he hadn’t known about the cargo he was carrying and found out about the theft upon returning to his vehicle, as he noticed that the back of his truck had been forcefully opened.

If each Nintendo Switch 2 console sells for $500, the total value of consoles potentially stolen would reach approximately $1.4 million. Yet, it’s doubtful that this amount represents the actual profit thieves could earn from selling all the consoles.

Black market goods

In conversation with 9NEWS, Steve Beaty, a computer science professor at MSU Denver, suggested that the pilfered items are more likely to be peddled illegally, as opposed to being listed on trustworthy platforms such as Craigslist or eBay.

He mentioned to the network that if items are stolen, they’d likely show up on the deep web or dark web within a short timeframe, unless they’re exported out of the country. Interestingly, he found it surprisingly fast, taking just two minutes for him to spot a Switch 2 being sold at half price in these suspicious online marketplaces.

As a gamer, I’d like to point out that every potential Switch 2 and its accessories such as Joy-Cons and battery come with a distinctive serial number. This means Nintendo has the power to render inoperable any Switch 2 console that violates their terms of service, which undoubtedly includes a device proven to be stolen.
