Yesterday, we had a substantial Nintendo Direct presentation largely centered around the Switch 2, which unveiled a new game from FromSoftware that appears to be a spiritual successor to Bloodborne, though I must admit I don’t feel envious about it.
In addition, it was unveiled that Elden Ring: The Tarnished Edition is now available for the latest console. This package includes the main game, Elden Ring, along with its highly acclaimed expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. Furthermore, it offers additional exclusive content.
The updated Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition offers four fresh armor sets and customizable looks for your steed, Torrent, with three distinct options available. We’re excited to share that you can now explore these new features!
A subsequent statement mentions that “this feature [the additional content] will also be offered for download on various other systems.” It’s important to note that the word “sold” might have been misused in some translations, and if Bandai Namco were to sell Elden Ring horse armor, it would indeed cause a stir. The only intriguing aspect is the mention of “new features” in another FromSoftware announcement, which could range from gyro aiming to new menu options.
Fans of Dark Souls 2 may recognize that one of the new armor sets is a tribute to the character Lucatiel, and the Mirrah Greatsword is also included. Although it’s likely to be renamed (as there are no Knights of Mirrah in the Lands Between), this implies that additional weapons will also be added in this update.
On the official website of the Tarnished Edition, it’s mentioned that Elden Ring has surpassed 28 million sales as of now. Back in June last year, when Shadow of the Erdtree was launched, its sales stood at 25 million. Thus, an additional 3 million copies sold in just nine months since Elden Ring was released in February 2022 is quite impressive. It seems that the key to success for AAA games lies in creating a truly exceptional game.
The Shadow of the Erdtree truly represented the pinnacle of FromSoftware’s capabilities, serving as a testament to their mastery of their own RPG style. This could be the reason why the upcoming installments in the series are adopting a significantly different approach, with Elden Ring: Nightreign leaning towards a cooperative roguelike design, catering more to those who revel in wielding massive swords to slay colossal monsters.
