Thor’s ‘Unique’ MCU Future After Avengers: Doomsday Teased by Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth is teasing Thor’s “unique” MCU future following Avengers: Doomsday.

Marvel is currently finishing up work on Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. The film is scheduled to hit US theaters later this year, and a follow-up movie, Avengers: Secret Wars, is planned for 2027.

Marvel has now released four short previews for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. The first preview confirmed Chris Evans will reprise his role as Captain America, the second highlighted Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and the third showcased several X-Men characters. The final preview focused on Shuri/Black Panther (Letitia Wright), Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon-Moss Bachrach), and others.

What did Chris Hemsworth say about Thor’s MCU future?

Chris Hemsworth mentioned on the SmartLess podcast, as reported by The Playlist, that he expects to reprise his role as Thor in a few more movies after the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

I discussed this with Kevin Feige, and he pointed out that audiences are now used to big surprises when it comes to this character,” Hemsworth explained. “We’re exploring some exciting and different ideas for what comes next, and we’re hoping to do something truly unique again.”

Chris Hemsworth likely mentioned the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie, as he’s previously suggested Thor will be in it. However, it’s currently unknown if Marvel Studios has any plans for a fifth solo Thor film beyond that, as one hasn’t been officially announced.

Chris Hemsworth explained that while the tonal shift in ‘Ragnarok’ was well-received, ‘Love and Thunder’ may have gone too far with its comedic approach. The film leaned heavily into absurdist humor, almost like a Monty Python sketch, and some viewers reacted negatively. They questioned why Thor was portrayed as such a comedic character, and Hemsworth admitted they were simply aiming for something different and having fun, but it didn’t land with everyone.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18, 2026.
