Thomas the Tank Engine returns to terrorize Morrowind as modder mocks Mattel crackdown

Thomas the Tank Engine is back in another popular video game thanks to a new modification. This time, the beloved blue engine flies around the world of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, replacing the game’s pesky cliff racers, as created by modder Trainwiz.

This new mod appears over ten years after a popular 2013 Skyrim mod created by Trainwiz started the ongoing trend of featuring Thomas the Tank Engine in various big video games.

The modder, who has previously made light of potential legal issues with Mattel, posted on Bluesky claiming that Mattel is trying to shut him down, alluding to previous disagreements regarding his modifications based on Thomas the Tank Engine.

I created a mod for Morrowind that swaps out the creatures called Cliff Racers with Thomas the Tank Engine. I seem to have a recurring issue with not being able to learn from experiences involving large companies – I just don’t see the heads of toy or media companies as people. #morrowind #thomasthetankengine

According to PC Gamer, he went ahead and released the Morrowind version even with his reservations, explaining that he created it a long time ago but never shared it, and now simply isn’t concerned about it anymore.

Elder Scrolls Thomas the Tank Engine mod returns

On the mod’s Nexus page, the creator, Trainwiz, playfully describes the features, jokingly listing things like “Satanism,” “the death of god,” and, as a final touch, replacing the dangerous cliff racers with Thomas the Tank Engine.

As a huge fan, I’m excited to say this mod has two options! You can either just swap out the regular cliff racers, or – and this is awesome – if you have another mod already installed, this one will make two new Thomases appear for every one you beat! It really ramps up the challenge.

The creator openly admitted to continuing the joke even though it might cause legal problems. They explained, “I just can’t seem to learn from my mistakes when it comes to corporations.” They added that they don’t see the heads of toy or media companies as individuals.

PC gamers widely use “Thomas the Tank Engine” modifications, adding the character to games like Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring, Fallout 4, and many others. Now, the classic game Morrowind has joined this trend, keeping the long-running joke alive. Trainwiz even jokingly suggests that the creators of Thomas & Friends might be keeping an eye on all the fun.

If Mattel gets involved again, it could ironically draw even more attention to the mod, which is a pattern that’s helped it grow popular over time.
