The class-based side-scrolling brawler/RPG Towerborne is coming to Xbox Series X|S consoles on April 29, when it will also be launching on Game Pass for both console and PC.
Towerborne comes from Stoic Studios, the creators of turn-based tactics series The Banner Saga, and actually launched in Steam Early Access on PC back in September 2024. The game is a combination of side-scrolling beat-’em-ups like Castle Crashers with the loot and replayability of an ARPG like Diablo, complete with different character classes to choose from and gear to customize. Published by Xbox Game Studios, Towerborne is now coming to Xbox with new features like cross-play and cross-progression, as well as couch co-op on console.
As detailed in an Xbox Wire post, all versions of the game, including the Steam version, will additionally be receiving the free Class Mastery update on April 29 that retools major parts of the game by adding a new class progression system and a revamped world map and main quest. Class Mastery will introduce skill points players can use to customize their class and introduce new skills and mechanics that will change how each class is played. Skill points can be swapped freely between missions, allowing players to experiment and find the perfect build for their playstyle.
The upcoming Class Mastery update introduces fresh adversaries, loot, and Umbra spirit allies, while also enabling control customization, enhancing the group search system, and introducing a novel health flask that alters the mechanics of respawning.
In this update, you’ll find new enemies, items, and Umbra companions, can adjust controls to your liking, experience better group finding, and there’s a new health flask that changes how you come back to life when you die.
Those playing on Xbox but who aren’t members of Game Pass can still check out Towerborne via the Xbox Game Preview program, where it will require the purchase of a Founder’s pack that comes with additional cosmetics and monthly rewards. Game Pass members will also score some in-game extras in the form of an exclusive set of Game Pass Perks for Towerborne (though what exactly those perks will be have not been revealed). How much Towerborne’s Founder’s Pack will cost on Xbox hasn’t been announced, but a silver Founder’s Pack on Steam is $25, while a gold version with more in-game content is $45.
In an early hands-on preview from shortly before the game’s early access release, we said Towerborne’s MMO-like progression systems and deep combat held promise and served as smart updates to the side-scrolling beat-’em-up genre.
