When considering a creature collector game, it’s not typical to envision a mouse transforming into a blob of chewed gum or a wilted flower. Yet, that’s the unique experience you can expect with Morsels, the debut game from developer Furcula, backed by Annapurna Interactive, a publisher renowned for games like Mixtape, one of my favorites from Summer Game Fest. Coincidentally, I was fortunate enough to preview an early demo of Morsels that weekend, which is now accessible to everyone on Steam.
Morsels is simultaneously disgusting and wholesome, and you wouldn’t believe me unless you played it
Morsels” is a game where you play as a mouse seeking cheese, but you gain an unexpected magical ability from the morsels. This lets you transform into different creatures at any time by collecting them. Journey through the sewers, battling strange creatures along the way, and ultimately confronting your nemesis – a gang of power-hungry cats.
What immediately catches your eye about Morsels is its unique pixelated, faded neon art style, which features a cast of grotesque and unsightly characters that inhabit this sewer system. Surprisingly though, these characters have a certain charm to them, reminiscent of how some ugly dogs can still be endearing. Given that this is a roguelike game, and one that’s quite tough, you’ll find yourself respawning often. Each time you do, you’re greeted by a massive creature who offers words of encouragement. Somehow, this small act makes the struggle all worth it.
In this game titled “Morsels“, the pace is breakneck as foes are relentlessly attacking from every direction. If you don’t act swiftly and begin firing at them, they will overwhelm you. Each level presents a confined space filled with enemies, and you must constantly battle your way to freedom.
At the beginning of each attempt, you get to pick one out of two unique characters:
The wilted flower unleashes a double blast in quick succession, making it ideal for close-range combat. The wad of bubble gum, on the other hand, drops bombs that detonate over a certain area. I believe those are the correct descriptions of the characters.
This game also boasts an extensive guide or manual, called a “codex”, detailing all the various creatures you can transform into once you’ve discovered them.
After unleashing a second character, I can swiftly switch between them on a whim. If one of my summoned characters runs out of health, it’ll automatically switch to another. Once all my characters are vanquished, I find myself back at the hub and must begin anew. However, there’s an alternative to jump straight into the fray without watching any cutscenes – a feature that’s perfect for those who just can’t wait to dive back in. But if you fancy exploring the hub or need a breather, you might want to pass on this speedy start option.
In Morsels, the game isn’t simple. You can only sustain four instances of damage before losing one of your characters. With hordes of enemies, projectiles whizzing about, and hazardous environments to contend with, it won’t take much for you to lose a health point or two. However, as is typical with most roguelikes, it requires some learning, a few setbacks, and eventually, you’ll get the hang of it. Fortunately, there’s a free demo available on Steam at this moment, which allowed me to play for just about half an hour during my recent demo at Summer Game Fest.
I’m grateful to Furcula and Annapurna Interactive for allowing me to experience the upcoming game, “Morsels,” at Summer Game Fest. Although we don’t have a definite release date just yet, this intriguing roguelike title is slated to debut later in 2022. You can look forward to playing it on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. If you’d like to stay informed, you can add it to your wishlist on Steam right now and even try the demo.
