As a devoted Harry Potter fan, I must admit that while we adore the movies, they’re not without their flaws. The visual elements, which breathed life into J.K. Rowling’s world, are generally well-appreciated by us fans. However, there are alterations made for the films that leave many of us puzzled and dissatisfied.
Supporters of Ravenclaw House at Hogwarts have always been open about their disapproval towards the modifications in the house’s colors and mascot. In J.K. Rowling’s books, this house is represented by blue and bronze colors, with an eagle as its symbol. However, for the movies, the decision was made to use blue and silver instead of bronze, and replace the eagle mascot with a raven.
In the Harry Potter series, each Hogwarts house has its own special colors and emblems that set it apart. Interestingly, the movies portray silver as a shared color for both Ravenclaw and Slytherin houses, while in the books, only Slytherin students were associated with silver.
Regarding the symbol of our home, the eagle embodied a comprehensive perspective and mental and emotional fortitude, attributes that resonated with the qualities of our student body, who demonstrated wisdom, quick thinking, intelligence, knowledge, prudence, creativity, and tolerance. However, in films, this emblem was swapped for a raven to align with the house’s name. It’s not hard to see why choosing a raven might have felt more fitting and intuitive as a representation of our home.
It seems that many Harry Potter fans are eagerly hoping that the changes made by the films will be undone as HBO Max prepares for its new series. They want the production to revert back to what was originally described in the books, restoring the bronze color and eagle mascot to Ravenclaw House, which have been popular choices among fans in previous official merchandise. In fact, there have even been petitions asking for this very change.
The plot isn’t significantly affected by this detail, but fans still seem eager for it to align with the original story. In the upcoming Harry Potter series, which promises a truer adherence to the source material, they might just get the change they’re hoping for.
