This Mortal Kombat Game Is Shutting Down After A Year

As a dedicated fan of Mortal Kombat and a long-time player of Mortal Kombat Onslaught, I am deeply saddened by the news that the game is shutting down later this year. It feels like just yesterday when I downloaded it from the App Store and was immediately drawn in by its engaging team-based RPG mechanics and iconic Mortal Kombat characters.

The developers have announced that they will be closing down Mortal Kombat Onslaught, the team-based role-playing game, in October 2024 – specifically on the 21st of that month. This comes approximately one year after the game’s initial launch on October 17, 2023.

Starting from today, July 22, the game will no longer be available for download on both the App Store and Google Play. The game itself will continue to function until October, but after that month, it will be shut down permanently. Furthermore, in-app purchases will be disabled starting August 23.

“It has been an honor creating this game for our Kommunity,” the developer said.

NetherRealm Studios, the creators of Mortal Kombat’s main installments, developed Mortal Kombat Onslaught. No reason was provided as to why this game is being taken offline. It’s not unusual for certain games to have a brief lifespan.

More recently, the CEO of Digital Extremes, the company behind Warframe, urged game developers of live-service titles to persevere and continue supporting their games rather than shutting them down and starting anew.

The first installment of Mortal Kombat’s main series, released in September 2023, was Mortal Kombat 1. As of now, no further games have been announced. However, the upcoming Mortal Kombat film, titled “Mortal Kombat 2,” is scheduled to hit theaters in October 2025.
