The global premiere of the Minecraft film saw impressive earnings, with strong indications suggesting that it could rake in an astounding $1 billion globally.
The prospects for a Minecraft film weren’t promising. Critics’ reviews were overwhelmingly unfavorable, with the movie earning a disappointing 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Moreover, TopMob’s evaluation of the film pointed out several issues, such as poor dialogue, a weak storyline, and animated characters that seemed more suitable for becoming Happy Meal toys than contributing to a high-quality production.
Initially, it was anticipated that the movie would earn somewhere around $70-$80 million on its opening weekend, which is certainly nothing to ignore. However, considering that producing a Minecraft Movie is expected to cost approximately $150 million (excluding promotional and advertising expenses), it seemed likely that the film would only achieve modest success.
However, analysts struggled to grasp the intensity of fan devotion towards the game, resulting in packed cinemas on its premiere day and transforming the weekend into a Minecraft-themed extravaganza that is anticipated to generate a billion dollars for studios Warner Bros. and Legendary.
A Minecraft Movie is busy breaking box office records
The figure we’re referring to is often considered the ultimate prize for major releases; however, the release of “A Minecraft Movie” in US cinemas managed to rake in an impressive $157 million, making it the highest-grossing domestic launch of the year. To add to that, it also grossed $144 million overseas, resulting in a staggering global total of $301 million.
It’s clear we still have a significant journey ahead before reaching the milestone of one billion users, but two comparisons hint that Minecraft could easily surpass this figure.
Previously, The Super Mario Bros. Movie held the record for the highest opening weekend earnings among video game adaptations, with a domestic gross of $146 million and a worldwide total of $1.36 billion. With its success surpassing that of the Mario and Luigi debut, it’s clear that Minecraft is aiming to outdo their combined total in future earnings.
Inside Out 2 holds the title as the highest-grossing animated film ever with a box office revenue of $1.699 billion. However, its domestic opening weekend of $154 million was outshone by Minecraft, which had an even more impressive start.
The second installment of Inside Out garnered excellent critiques, boosting word-of-mouth during its cinema release. However, let’s not dismiss the enthusiasm of Minecraft enthusiasts filling cinemas with applause and even the occasional outburst, occasionally leading to minor disturbances.

The promotional efforts for the movie have been widespread, as McDonald’s, Oreo, and Doritos have secured significant partnerships to advertise Minecraft. This collaboration ensures that the brand remains top-of-mind among the public for the upcoming weeks.
Until Disney’s and Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” hits theaters in May, there’s no major cinematic rival for a Minecraft movie featuring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and their eclectic gaming character cohort. April, therefore, seems to be their domain.
